(May 13, 2011) – Yamaha’s Josh Hayes captured the provisional pole on Friday during qualifying for the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike class at the West Coast Moto Jam at Infineon Raceway. Hayes, who has won three of the last four AMA Pro Road Racing SuperBike main events in Sonoma dating back to 2009, continued his success on the 12-turn, 2.32-mile road course. He turned the track at 1 minute, 36.397 seconds. He was followed by Tommy Hayden (Suzuki, 1:36.509) and Redding native Ben Bostrom (Suzuki, 1:36.846). “I’m very fortunate that my crew does such a good job to get me a bike that is absolutely perfect,” said Hayes, the defending AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike national champion. “It works the same every time I get on it. I know I can go out and ride my behind off from the get-go”¦. I’ve had some really good races throughout my career here at Infineon and I really enjoy this track.” Locally, Oakland native and Acalanes High School graduate Steve Rapp (BMW) qualified eighth in SuperBike at 1:37.988. Rapp was as high as third in the qualifying session but drifted to eighth. He is also competing in the Vance & Hines XR1200 Series this weekend. Jake Holden (Ducati) grabbed the top spot in provisional qualifying for Daytona SportBike at 1:39.444, followed by Josh Herrin (Yamaha, 1:39.626) and Danny Eslick (Suzuki, 1:40.182). “We’re going to have a real fun year and to be quick here in the session makes it all worth it. I’m super excited and this is one of my favorite tracks,” said Holden, who won in SuperStock in Sonoma in 2008. “I love technical tracks and I have a lot of confidence here. I think we’ll run up front no matter what (in the race); there’s just a lot of tough guys out there; it’s a tough pack.” Benny Solis (Honda) topped the speed charts in AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport qualifying, turning the track at 1:42.413. He was followed by Tomas Puerta (Yamaha, 1:43.342) and David Gaviria (Yamaha, 1:43.652). Discovery Bay’s Elena Myers, who became the first female in history to win an AMA Pro Road Race when she took the checkers in Sonoma in the SuperSport class in 2010, withdrew from competition after experiencing pain from a broken wrist sustained just three weeks ago. “This is my first time here since 2008, but it’s a really fun track and close to my house (North Hollywood),” said Solis, who won the Red Bull Rookies Cup event in Sonoma in 2008. “The secret for me is having fun. This is a tough track with a lot of elevation changes, but having fun helps me put together a good lap.” Action returns on Saturday at Infineon Raceway with final qualifying, followed by main events in SuperSport (1 p.m.), Daytona SportBike (2 p.m.) and Pro National Guard SuperBike (3:15 p.m.). More, from a press release issued by Team M4 Suzuki: CARDENAS QUALIFIES FOURTH ON FIRST DAY AT INFINEON RACEWAY M4 Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas continued to demonstrate his ability to be a major player in the AMA Superbike class, provisionally qualifying the team’s GSX-R1000 on the front row on Friday at Infineon Raceway. Hustling a 200-horsepower Superbike around the tight, twisty, and blind Northern California circuit is no simple task, but the reigning AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Champion showed his sheer talent and the team’s ability to field a quality Superbike by logging competitive times with the class’ established stars. Cardenas clocked the third fastest time in the morning practice at 1:38.159 and then proceeded to lop nearly a full off his best mark in the subsequent qualifying session with a 1:37.289. That lap was the fourth best of the session, strong enough to place him on the outside of the provisional front row. “We improved the bike quite a bit from the practice to qualifying, which was very encouraging,” Cardenas said. “The top two guys are pretty far out there but we’ll look to continue to improve and close the gap. “The Superbike is a bit a handful around this racetrack, especially around the chicane area. It wants to wheelie and move quite a lot, but I am adapting to it and getting better. It’s actually a lot of fun.” Teammate Chris Ulrich will look to improve on Saturday after ranking 14th in Saturday’s qualifying session at 1:39.601. Meanwhile in the Daytona SportBike class, Dane Westby put the GSX-R600 on the overnight second row. The Oklahoman was eighth quick on the day, lapping at 1:40.990. Santiago Villa was 14th at 1:43.314, although that position does not tell the full story for the Colombian on Friday. Villa was set back due to an incident early in qualifying, preventing him from again showing the potential he flashed by running seventh fastest in the morning practice session. The four M4 Suzuki pilots will claim their final spots on the grids for the weekend’s twin Superbike and SportBike races at the conclusion of tomorrow morning’s qualifying sessions before going racing in the afternoon. I get emotional thinking about how everyone is helping.” A young Benny Solis (Roadracingworld.com) from North Hollywood, California, took the provisional pole position for the weekend’s two AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport races. Riding the only Honda in the class, Solis posted an impressive lap early in the session then underlined his speed on with a last-lap time of 1:42.413. “This is my fourth time riding at Infineon Raceway and I like it very much,” said Solis after qualifying. The AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 riders took to the track for their first practice session Friday afternoon and will qualify in a Saturday morning session. AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track star Sammy Halbert will be contending the V-twin class this weekend, joining multi-time AMA Pro Flat Track champion Joe Kopp and others in the seventeen-rider, Harley-Davidson XR1200-equipped class.
