CENTRAL ROADRACING ASSOCIATION ROUND 1 RECAP

The Central Roadracing Association held their first race weekend of the season May 6-8 in very mixed conditions. Rain tires were the hot ticket in quite a few races and more than one rider had a face-to-face meeting with the Brainerd International Raceway pavement. At one point, the runoff in turn 12 resembled a racebike salvage yard!

The Middleweight Supersport Expert race was a classic humdinger with 2010 Champ Robert Pretts battling with Christian Schmidt and Shane Fletcher to the line. Proving that one fast lap doesn’t make the race, Fletcher nabbed the win over Schmidt, who had the race’s fastest lap, with Pretts an incredibly close third. All three riders crossed the line side-by-side and the gap from first to third was .125 seconds!

The Heavyweight Supersport Novice race was run under mixed conditions that had the race start in the rain but saw the sun come out around halfway. Brett Folkerts took the win in a disciplined ride, coming home in front of Marlin Johnson, competing in his first race weekend, with Adam Purves rounding out the podium.

Fletcher continued his run at the front of the Expert field on his Yamaha R6 in the Unlimited Supersport class. Fletcher took the win in front of the Yamaha R1 piloted by Zach Hughes and Kawasaki ZX-6R mounted Robert Pretts. And unfortunately for Chase Sellers, the “highlight” of the race was his once-beautiful R6 destroying itself, and almost taking some cornerworkers with it, on its way to the often-visited turn 12 runoff area. Chase was okay and was able to come back and win his second Expert race later in the weekend.

The Lightweight Novice Grand Prix frontrunners put on a fantastic show in the wet with the top-3 crossing the line .732 seconds apart. Jon Champ took the win ahead of Alex Zelenski and Cole Naymark in a race that saw the front four places constantly changing, eventually becoming the top-3 when Jake Northrup slid off his bike exiting turn 12 and spent the rest of the race splashing in the puddles in the runoff area.

The New Rider grid featured some very impressive performances by some soon-to-be rising stars of the CRA. Peter Troyer simply checked out on the field, taking the win by over 20 seconds! Christian Alvarado and Jeremy Bloms finished off the New Rider podium. With 20 New Riders participating in the race, the future looks bright, indeed.
