BRASELTON, GA Motorcycles that professional stars like Dale “The Flying Pig Farmer” Singleton, Scott Russell, Damon Buckmaster, Jamie Hacking, and Anthony Gobert rode to significant race victories or AMA Pro Racing championships will roar back to life when the Historic Moto Gran Prix (HMGP) opens the 2011 season April 29-May 1 at Road Atlanta as part of The Mitty. Now in the hands of collectors, more than 50 historically significant motorcycles will be part of the HMGP display and gentleman-style races. While most entries are the actual race bikes, some are “look-alikes”, or machines that have been refurbished to similar to race bikes that may not exist today. “We will have a terrific collection of motorbikes that each have an interesting and unique special history,” says Bill Brown, former AMA Pro racer and founder of the Historic Moto Gran Prix series. “These collectors appreciate the historical value of these motorcycles and want to share their love of motorcycle history.” The 1979 Yamaha TZ750D that Singleton rode to victory in the Daytona 200 in 1979 and ’81 is entered, and his brother, Spencer, will be in attendance to represent, Dale, who died in a plane crash in 1985. Singleton also finished second in the Daytona 200 in 1980 and won the AMA National Road Racing Championship in 1981. Other interesting entries include: · Two rare Yamaha R7s owned by Ray and Mary Hoss of Knoxville, Tenn., who will also bring a Graves-Buckmaster Yamaha R7/R1 ridden by Damon Buckmaster that was once outlawed by AMA Pro Racing. · The Hoss family will also enter two Scott Russell Yamaha YZF 750 look-alikes. · A Rickman Honda CB 750 owned by Mike Hodgson of Atlanta, prepared by Racing Sports Services. Hodgson will also bring his Honda CB 750 Superbike. · Jamie Hacking’s 2005 Yamaha R1 SuperSport machine entered by Randy Sautner. While Hacking didn’t win the AMA championship in 2005, he did win the Supersport Championship on a R6 in 2003 and 2006 and a Superstock Championship on a R1 in 2006. · Former WERA endurance champion Todd Reynolds will ride his Honda CB 1000F and has acquired a Kawasaki ZX 7R he will bring to Road Atlanta. Both his bikes were built by Racing Sports Services. · Greg Craft will bring his collection of Harley-Davidson racing look-alikes, including one that is similar to the VR1000 Harley-Davidson that Mike Smith crashed coming down the hill at Turn 12 at Road Atlanta. Smith’s bike burned to the ground in that famous incident. · Paul Layman and his family will bring their Yamaha R6s that Paul rode with his sons in WERA endurance events. Paul, now 75, still claims to “ride like the wind.” · Stan Keys of Jacksonville, FL, will bring a pair of 750 Nortons that were raced in the 1960s. · Doug Roberts of Ball Ground, Ga., will bring two Yamaha RZ 350 and one Yamaha RZ 500. · Kevin Spitler will enter a look-alike Anthony Gobert factory-kitted Yamaha R7 American Superbike. · John Early of Raleigh, NC, will enter a 1962 Honda CB/77 with the factory five-speed transmission. · Mike Embry of Atlanta will bring his Suzuki GSX-R750/850, ridden by Brian Stokes and Geoff May in AMA Pro Racing competition. That bike was also built by Racing Sports Services. · Dave Rutherford of Atlanta will bring his Harris single-cylinder road racer. “We encourage anyone who owns a vintage bike that they would like to put on display or enter in the races to contact us,” Brown says. “We are kicking off our fourth season and this will be our greatest ever.” The Historic Moto Gran Prix has been partners with Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) for three years, and brings a two-wheel element to the traditional collection of sports cars.
