Team Suzuki’s Josh Waters notched up his second race win of the Viking Group Australian Superbike Championship season at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway this afternoon. From pole position the 24-year-old made a steady start and wrestled the lead off iStyle The Natural Aprilia Racing Team’s Ben Attard who was impressive in the early stages. Championship leader Glenn Allerton also slipped through, though the Procon Maxima BMW did not have the measure of Waters’ Suzuki who was relatively untroubled on the way to a 5.36-second win. Team Honda’s Jamie Stauffer was solid in third though it was teammate Wayne Maxwell who almost stole the show. Yesterday’s mechanical problem saw the Victorian start from the third row of the grid, a disadvantage in itself considering the talent of the eight riders ahead of him. Amazingly, Maxwell was mounted aboard the Team Honda two-seater machine used to take pillion passengers on promotional laps, with race bodywork and suspension fitted. He almost pulled off the ride of his life, climbing to second and looming large behind Waters before running off at the end of the front straight, unable to re-start his stricken Honda. Waters smashed his own standing race lap record, lowering the mark from 1:07.994s to an incredible 1:07.269s. The second and final race of the weekend will be held from 3.35pm this afternoon, and all riders will be aiming to stop Waters recording back-to-back race and round wins in the Top End.
