The relatively warm and sunny first day was replaced by a cold and overcast second day of action. Both Kawasaki riders took a tumble at turn three this morning, on the first left-hander after a series of rights, but recovered to post good qualifying times and strong race pace. No less than 28 riders qualified for the 22-lap race, to be held at 13.30 hours on Sunday, with Massimo Roccoli (Lorenzini by Leoni Kawasaki) going into the top ten after combined qualifying. His team-mate Vittorio Iannuzzo was 14th today. Broc Parkes: “It all ended up pretty good in the afternoon session. I had a crash on the fast left down Craner Curves, on a cold tyre this morning, and it is a lot faster down there than I thought! I hurt myself a little; my right thumb and a couple of ribs are quite sore. I was a bit worried about how it would be in qualifying this afternoon but I was fine. The weather was a bit cooler today and it was hard to make the lap times simply because of that. But we worked it out and I was fourth on the grid and second in the session. Our consistency of lap time is pretty good as well. Our race pace should be right there and we may try a couple of new things tomorrow, but just little touches here or there.” David Salom: “I will have a reasonable starting position tomorrow so that is the most important thing. I had a small problem with the bike in final qualifying session, just some chatter when I opened the throttle but I think it is maybe because I had a crash this morning. The guys are checking now but no problem; we will be fine for tomorrow. Luca Scassa establish himself in pole position followed only for a few second’s fractions by Chaz Davies, that did a wonderful job improving his time dispite the difficult weather condition. Both the riders will start at the green light with the aim to climb the highest step during a round that seems particularly battled. Just behind them are raring the Honda of Lowes and Ellison and the Kawasaki of Parkes and Salom. But Scassa and Davies are ready and tomorrow will use the warm-up just to choose the tyre-setting considering the daily temperature that between today and yesterday went 12 degrees lower. Luca Scassa – Yamaha YZF R6 # 9″ – I’m really happy that i’ve been able to establish myself, but it’s important that I could do it again tomorrow. The team did an amazing job providing me with the ultimate bike that even along today’s conditions allowed me to be really fast and to prepare the round at the best. Won’t be easy to repeat today’s performance but I’m really determined about it. I don’t think to be too demanding…” More, from a press release issued by Hannspree Ten Kate Honda: Florian Marino will start tomorrow’s second round World Supersport championship race from row three of the grid after setting the ninth fastest time in this afternoon’s final qualifying session at Donington Park in the UK. Pole position was taken by first round winner Luca Scassa, as Marino’s Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team-mate Fabien Foret rode through 16 laps of pain to 12th place on the grid after sustaining a serious injury to the ring finger of his fright hand in a practice crash yesterday. Foret underwent an operation to put two screws in his finger yesterday evening and the 38-year-old French rider missed the whole of this morning’s second free practice session while a splint was made for him at the Clinica Mobile. Marino, 18, made steady progress today, improving his lap time as he continues to learn more with his new team and becomes more accustomed to Honda’s CBR600RR Supersport machine. Florian Marino P9 Today was OK and we continued to improve the bike but we must work on the last sector still. I am losing almost 0.5s there every lap and although the small corners look easy, it’s quite difficult to get them right and find the line as I’m shifting around on the bike. The rest of the lap is quite good and I’m one of the faster guys. So I’m on the third row for tomorrow and I must make a good start this time and get as close to the front as I can. Then we’ll see how the races develops. Fabien Foret P12 I guess you can say I’m happy that I can do a 1m32s lap of Donington with one hand, but it’s not so good really. Physically, I can’t really ride the bike properly. Maybe tomorrow I could ride for three or four points but it’s a big risk. I don’t really know how things will be tomorrow. I will speak with Ronald and maybe wait until tomorrow to make a decision. Ronald ten Kate team manager Fabien’s run of bad luck that started in Australia seems to be continuing here. He doesn’t really have many uninjured fingers remaining on his right hand. The latest damage was bolted back together yesterday but he’s obviously still in a lot of discomfort, so we’ll give him another night’s rest and make a decision tomorrow morning whether or not he can ride. There are far happier faces on Florian’s side of the garage he’s doing really well again, chipping away and improving his time every session. He seems to be ready to race tomorrow so hopefully he can avoid a start like the one he had in Phillip Island and hang in there with the front guys in the race.
