AMA Pro Racing history is littered with cases of riders crashing after contact with someone else’s bike either applies the front brake and locks the front wheel at speed, or moves the front brake lever out of reach. Tommy Hayden at Willow Springs, Steve Rapp at Road America, Martin Cardenas at Auto Club Speedway and now Dane Westby at Daytona come immediately to mind. GPtech owner and mastermind Geoff Maloney is not the first person to develop a guard designed to keep the front brake lever from being applied by contact with another rider or another rider’s machine, but he is the most recent, and examples of his part showed up at Daytona last week. “I have designs ready to go for all the other popular models and master cylinders,” Maloney wrote in an e-mail to Roadracingworld.co. “The Harley-Davidson was just the starting point.” If nothing else, the horrific crash in the run to the finish line at Daytona on Saturday should jump-start interest in a way to prevent future incidents.
