Life-long motorcycle racer and starter “Airborne Al” Wilcox of Trenton, New Jersey and 12 other people will be honored and inducted into the Daytona 200 Monument. Everyone is invited to the Daytona 200 Monument ceremony on Wednesday, March 9 at noon on the Boardwalk in front of the Hilton Hotel, just up from the Bandshell in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Daytona 200 Monument was founded by 3-time Daytona 200 winner on the beach course, Dick Klamfoth, in co-operation with the Mayor and City of Daytona Beach and dedicated on March 7, 2002. This striking monument is in memory of the men who raced motorcycles on the old beach course. There are many beautiful granite plaques honoring our heroes who raced before us. Share your memories of these great racers and legends. Some light food and refreshments will be served. Motorcycles are encouraged to park on the boardwalk in front of the monument. It will be a beautiful day on the beach with some beautiful people and motorcycles. On Friday, April 1 at Summit Point Raceway, West Virginia, Roger Lyle’s Motorcycle Xcitement Track Days and Road Racing School opens the season. At noon we will have “A Tribute to Al Wilcox, The Man” at the Al Wilcox Start-Finish Line. We have a nice video of Al’s lifetime dedication to motorcycle racing. He went to the motorcycle races for 70 years! We have some cool stickers made up in memory of our beloved hero. The stickers are free and if you want to donate to a worthy cause in Al Wicox’s memory, he asked that you contribute to the Road Racing World Action Fund to provide soft barriers for motorcycle racers. The Roadracing World Action Fund is a non-profit corporation set up by John and Trudy Ulrich in 2001 and has been saving racers for 10 years! Thank you, John and Trudy. Al Wilcox, 92, passed away on February 3, 2011. He will be missed but never forgotten.
