Known for their highly specialized carbon fiber monocoque tails and megaphone exhausts, Double Dog Moto will reveal new cutting edge products including carbon fiber and titanium rearsets, a dual exit under-belly muffler for the BMW S1000RR and new Kawasaki ZX1000RR, monocoque tails for most Superbikes in non-carbon composites and a new version of their successful expansion chamber megaphone. Said President and Chief Engineer, Mark Henry: “This is our first Dealer Expo, and we intend to make a statement with a lot of products that have never been seen before. We are only interested in creating innovations that solve real problems for racers and serious street riders, so by definition our products will always be ‘different’ and sometimes a bit of a shock in an industry that is more product-conservative than it probably realizes.” Carbon Fiber rearsets – possible? Using technology from their structural monocoque tails, the new BMW rearsets (more models coming soon) are laminations of carbon fiber and titanium for maximum crash resistance and minimum weight. Said Henry: “These are definitely not something you should try at home!”, referring to the significant engineering knowledge and R&D resources required. “These are half the weight of competitor rearsets, and much stiffer and stronger where it counts. We love composites, and we understand their advantages and limitations very well. We wouldn’t make all-carbon rearsets, and we wouldn’t make all-titanium rearsets, but if you know how to combine them in the right way you get something that is far superior to either alone.” Under-belly mufflers: Called the ‘Stealth’ (obvious when you see the picture!), their patent-pending under-belly muffer with carbon fiber shell fits neatly in the same position as the stock catalytic converter and exits gases on each side. Benefits include far less weight and lower center of mass, improved flow for more power, split sound emissions, and no protruding cans to damage in crashes. Composite monocoque tail units: Their new Composite Exoskeleton monocoque tails may also be a world-first. Replacing entire subframes and cowlings, these structural units are manufactured from the same molds as the Double Dog Moto carbon fiber monocoques, but use no carbon fiber: just glass fiber, Kevlar, and titanium laminated in a very specialized technique that achieves almost the same strength and stiffness as carbon fiber, for only an extra pound or so weight. Said Henry, “We were keen to get involved in AMA and homologated our exhausts for the 2011 season, but our main specialty, carbon fiber, was banned back in 2009 to reduce costs for the teams. With development focus we worked out we could achieve almost the same result without the carbon fiber. The key is the titanium and how it works with the composite to add strength and ‘crashability’. With riders depending on a secure place to sit their butts, this is another thing you shouldn’t try at home!
