Silverstone and its owners, the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), are delighted to announce that the name chosen for the iconic new Pit, Paddock and Conference building is ‘The Silverstone Wing’. ‘The Wing’ is synonymous with motor sport, but also connects with Silverstone’s aviation history, therefore illustrating both the circuit’s rich heritage and its exciting future. Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, explains: “‘The Silverstone Wing’ is a highly appropriate name. ‘Flight’ and ‘velocity’ were key themes incorporated into the design brief, and the streamlined form of the new building conjures up the impression of speed, dynamic motion and the grace of a bird’s wing in full flight.” A recent competition, inviting members of the public to name the new building, generated more than 4,000 entries. Phillips added, “Many of the competition entrants suggested names that included the word ‘wing’, or related to types of birds. After careful deliberation by the Silverstone team the entries were whittled down to just 20 names, which were then presented to the BRDC Board for discussion at the November Board Meeting.” ‘The Wing’ was submitted by 10 members of the public as a potential name for the new building. Originally, entrants coming up with the best suggestion were to be entered into a draw, with the lucky winner walking away with a prize package.
