The motorcycle industry came together to celebrate champions, both present and past, at the Viking Group Australian Superbike Championship Awards Dinner at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium last week. Attended by riders, teams, sponsors, their affiliates and members of the media, the event was a chance to reflect upon the competition and more importantly, the camaraderie that the close-knit industry enjoys. Host Aaron Noonan welcomed guests and acknowledged the contribution of series partners in assisting to create a successful and world-class championship, both on and off the track. These partners are: Viking Group Australia, Insure My Ride, Motorcycling Australia, Motul, Cougar Bourbon, Suzuki, Honda, Dunlop, Monza Imports, RaceSafe, KTM, Ducati and Australian Motorcycle News. Lifetime achievement awards were then presented to Ron Kivovitch and Stuart Strickland, two names that are synonymous with the motorcycle industry in Australia. Together, their invaluable involvement has spanned nine decades. Two memorial awards were presented in honour of the sport’s fallen heroes. The Kirk McCarthy Memorial Award, presented by Phil Tainton, was awarded to Victorian rider Kris McLaren. The Judd Greedy Memorial Award for Privateer Supersport, presented by Julie Greedy and Rodney Lamb, was awarded to another Victorian, Christian Casella. Hosting the first standalone motorcycle meeting in the Northern Territory, Hidden Valley won the Event of the Year Award, with IEG Managing Director praising the tireless efforts of the Northern Territory Government. Government representatives were presented with an incredible trophy an actual Honda Superbike featuring a striking and detailed aboriginal art livery. Troy Herfoss was presented with the RK Chain Samurai Trophy, which recognises a rider’s rising talent and outstanding performance on and off the track. The Best Presented Team award, presented by Ken Wootton, was won by Ducati Motologic Racing. Australian Motorcycle News Rider of the Year honours, presented by editor Matt Shields, went to Superbike champion Bryan Staring. Yarrive Konsky, Managing Director of the International Entertainment Group, promoters of the Australian Superbike Championship, congratulated all present on an exemplary year, both on the track and off. “We are very proud of what the championship has been able to achieve this year thanks to the efforts of all involved riders, teams, officials and our valuable series partners,” said Konsky. “The Awards Evening offered a chance for us to show our gratitude, and brought together riders from all classes as well as industry personnel and media. “Our vision for the Australian Superbike Championship is clear and we will continue working towards creating the most professional and entertaining motorsport series in 2011.” Individual rider and Team Awards Dunlop Australian 250cc Mono Championship” Presented by Ken Wieden, Dunlop. 1.
