The finale of the 2010 MRA season was held on October 9th & 10th at High Plains Raceway. Cooler temperatures prevailed all weekend, and Sunday morning practice and Race of the Rockies qualifying occurred under wet conditions. But the track dried out for Sunday racing and overall the weekend was a beautiful end to the season.
Dan “Otis” Turner rode decisively for the final round, winning both Race of the Rockies GTO and Open Superbike on his GSX-R1000. Thanks to outstanding riding all season, Turner earned a record seventh MRA #1 plate, and also clinched the 2010 Open Superbike Championship. After the ROR win Turner warmly thanked his sponsors and wife, and took a victory lap with the checkered flag to celebrate. Congratulations on your #1 plate, Dan!
Two riders captured the lion’s share of class championships this weekend. Josh Galster and his Slednecks Kawasaki took five championships, in Middleweight Supersport and Middleweight Superbike, Heavyweight Supersport and Heavyweight Superbike, and Race of the Rockies GTU. Thanks to strong riding in the unlimited Race of the Rockies GTO, Galster will also wear the MRA #3 plate for 2011. Shannon Moham too had a fantastic 2010 season, winning four class titles in Solo Lightweight Endurance, SuperTwins GTU, Lightweight GrandPrix, and Modern Vintage GTU.
The pits were buzzing this weekend with the sudden appearance of nine Ninja 250’s. In keeping with the MRA’s goal of refilling the paddock in a down economy, a budget-friendly Ninja 250 Cup has been proposed for 2011. To gauge interest two Ninjette demonstration races were held, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. The idea seemed to strike a chord, as newly acquired 250 race bikes not only filled the demo grids but piled into every lightweight class on the schedule. To the chagrin of some and amusement of many, two local mini road racers showed up with new 250’s, bought licenses, and promptly trounced the rest of the 250 field. MRA officials were pleased to announce that MotoAdventure Kawasaki, a dealership out of Loveland, CO, has already come forward asking to sponsor the Ninja Cup. The new class proposal goes before the MRA membership later this month for consideration.
As reported in the November issue of Roadracing World, the MRA continues to reach out to the street rider and track day community with its introductory SuperStreet class. This weekend MRA officials were thrilled to announce a new sponsor for SuperStreet, Ayden Lee Racing. Ayden Lee Racing has stepped up to provide leathers and gear for use by SuperStreet racers. This continues the mission of the SuperStreet program, to allow interested riders to try road racing before committing to a full race program.
