Cheetham takes first win as Fry wraps up 848 title Mark Cheetham ensured this season didn’t end up a Buildbase whitewash by taking victory in the the Ducati 848 Challenge at Cadwell Park this weekend, although it was Darren Fry who rounded off a magnificent season by taking the Championship title at the final round. The ever popular Cheetham, onboard the Preston-based Shorrocks Motorcycles Ducati 848, stormed to his first series win in appalling wet and blustery conditions in Lincolnshire, and in doing so fulfilled the promise he has shown all season. Having scored a string of second and third places, only once not taking to the podium this year, Cheetham went all out for a race win and got his reward for outpacing his rivals in the early laps of the first race by taking the chequered flag ahead of Leon Morris, the Buildbase/JHP Racing rider. The final stages of the race turned out to be real nail biting stuff as Cheetham, sensing a race win and consolidating his position on a track awash with standing water, backed off a little too much and almost lost it to Morris, crossing the line only three hundredths of a second ahead of the youngster. Finishing third behind them both was Barry Poll, who for much of the race was lying second on his Italia Moto-sponsored bike, only to be pipped by Morris on the last lap. Rob Wilson and Aaron Brown, both racing only their second round of the series this year, recorded a very respectable fourth and fifth respectively, after a close incident at the bottom of the Mountain on lap five that forced Brown to take to the grass all the way up the steep section. Both will surely feature amoung the front runners next season. And so it was Fry, wisely taking the points over the podium, who came home sixth to collect ten points and in doing so became the first Championship winner of the Ducati 848 Challenge. Capping off a dominant season in which he scored eight wins and three second places, Fry rode to his plan to score just enough points to keep him out of reach of his only rival for the title, Buildbase/JHP Racing team-mate Morris. Peter Hasler then led home Alan Moreton, riding in the series for the first time on the Ducati UK bike, and Stuart Poyser and Sean Hourigan rounded out the race. Having secured the series title, fans of the series were treated to something a little bit different from Fry as he crashed out of the second race. Lying second, and chasing down eventual race winner Morris along Park Straight, Fry hit standing water on the approach to Park and lost the front end. This opened up the opportunity for Cheetham to record another podium place, and for a jubilant Brown to record his first series podium on his comeback to racing. Hasler, riding the Boast Plumbing bike, had made a great start and opened up a gap on Wilson, but, like Cheetham in the first race, started to slow and was caught by the HandTrans-mounted Wilson on lap 5 of the shortened race. Moreton, Poyser, and Hourigan completed the race, and with it the inaugural season of the Ducati 848 Challenge. Ducati UK MD, Tim Maccabee, was there to fully congratulate Fry on his series win, and at the same time announce plans to riders and teams to continue the series into 2011. Final Championship standings: Fry 270pts, Morris 256pts, Cheetham 223pts, Poll 155pts, Hasler 134pts, Garner 79pts, Poyser 76pts, Hourigan 67pts, Brown 49pts, Wilson 42pts, Fagan 39pts, Walker 25 pts, Langford 24pts, Moreton 18pts More, from a press release issued by Waznie Racing: Szoke Scores Another Soggy Trials Victory in St George ON Loading up the Raga GasGas300 in the steady drizzle, Jordan Szoke prepared for the final CMA Sanctioned Provincial Round of 2010 located just a few kilometers from his home in St George ON. The rain had organizers busy first thing as they found themselves scrambling to reposition all the markers to allow for the unexpected moisture. Heading out for his first loop out of three, Szoke scores his best result of the day, and notches up only 14 points in the nine carefully prepared sections. Riding with his good friend Jonathan English of Belleville ON, the two competitors feed off of one another to keep their feet up amongst the slippery conditions. As the two Experts prepared for the third and final loop, English trailed Szoke by only nine points. Competition was close, and both men remained focused as they refueled their equipment for their final chance to gain a few points. Szoke finishes out the day in first place with a final score of 45. “I rode really well today” says Szoke. “Although I had two unnecessary “5’s” in the second and third loop which would have bettered my score a bit. I am really liking my new Raga, the stiffer frame is allowing me to be a bit more aggressive in the sections.” English scored second place during the event with a score of 63, earning him the Ontario Provincial Championship. More, from a press release issued by Spears Enterprises/Spears Racing: Spears Enterprises/Spears Racing came into Thunderhill Park Raceway this pass weekend with a lot of momentum after winning the California State Championship Series “650 Twins Class” two weeks ago at the famous Willow Springs Raceway. “We had our work cut out for us this weekend. It’s always a good place to be, leading championships on the final race weekend, but you still need to race the race,” says owner Gregg Spears. From the first AFM race weekend, rider Dave Raff has finished on the podium in all of his 20 races and in the process has set numerous class track records. Raff commented, “We set our goals to win the AFM 650 Production, Formula 4, and 650 Twins and the California State Championship Series 650 Twins Class.” The weekend went as planned. The 650 Twins race was a battle up front, and with Dave knowing he just needed to finish the race to capture the Championship, he finished 3rd. The next race was 650 Production, which Gregg Spears decided to skip, considering Raff had such a large point lead. The third race of the day was Formula 4. In this race Dave needed to finish 6th or better to bring home Spears Racing’s fourth Championship of the season, and Dave finished 4th in the race. “The 2010 race season was completely awesome, and if you hang out in the Spears Racing Pits long enough and that’s what you’ll see – hard work pays off. Gregg, Lisa, & Trevor worked their butts off this year to help us get here,” says Raff.
