(September 24, 2010) – Today’s first round of AMA Pro Road Racing qualifying at Barber Motorsports Park produced some indicators for the weekend of championship deciders and also produced one slight surprise. In AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike qualifying, all eyes were on championship contenders Josh Hayes and Tommy Hayden, but it was Hayden’s Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate Blake Young that set the pace and took the provisional pole position for the doubleheader weekend. Blake set a time of 1:25.775. Young was feeling pretty good in his second event weekend back after missing a number of races following a testing accident here at Barber Motorsports Park. “I came here to win,” said Young. “I know there is a championship going on and I want to help Tommy but my crew have worked really hard for me all year and I would love to reward their hard work with a couple of wins. ” Making his own on-track statement, Tommy Hayden wound up second with a time of 1:25.939 and the resurgent John Hopkins continued his good form from New Jersey Motorsports Park with the third quickest time (1:26.027) on his M4 Monster Energy Suzuki. Championship points leader Josh Hayes was fourth with a time of 1:26.126 on his Team Graves Yamaha with Jake Holden right behind him substituting for Ben Bostrom on the Pat Clark Motorsports Palms Casino Yamaha. Ben suffered some rib injuries after his accident in the second at New Jersey and as he prepared for the Barber race, he discovered he couldn’t race. In AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Presented by AMSOIL, Josh Herrin took the top spot after posting the quickest time in the morning practice. Herrin ran a lap of 1:28.578 on his Team Graves Yamaha. Herrin and his championship rivals all ran in the top three or four and at one point were one-two-three in the session. Points leader Danny Eslick had a fall during the qualifying session and had to revert to his spare GEICO Powersports Suzuki and ended up third with a time of 1:28.912. Martin Cardenas ended up fourth fastest with a time of 1:28.961 on his M4 Monster Energy Suzuki. Taking second in the session was Project 1 Atlanta Yamaha rider Clinton Seller who turned a solid lap of 1:28.885 to put Clinton firmly in the middle of the battle around him for the Daytona SportBike championship. In SuperSport, West Division Young Gun champion Joey Pascarella made things exciting as he and East Division Young Gun champion J.D. Beach battled throughout the 40 minute qualifying session. Each took turns at the top of the time sheets until late in the session Joey posted a sensational lap of 1:29.984 on his DNA Energy Drink Yamaha. As he went for an even better time, Joey had a fall at the end of the session going into turn one. The damage was mostly superficial and his CNR Motorsports team will have the Yamaha ready to go for tomorrow mornings final qualifying session. J.D. Beach had never seen the track until this weekend and as usual is on a very rapid rate of familiarization. J.D. took his Rockwall Engineering Yamaha to a time of 1:30.647. New Jersey race two winner James Rispoli was third on his ANT-Racing.com Suzuki with a time of 1.31.037. Final qualifying will be tomorrow morning and then race one in each class will be run tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:00 PM. More, from a press release issued by Acorn Woods Communications on behalf of Yoshimura Racing: Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young Nabs Provisional Pole * Blake Young set the fastest lap time in Qualifying 1 at Barber Motorsports Park on Friday afternoon with his Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000. * Tommy Hayden scored the second-fastest time as he fights for the 2010 AMA American SuperBike championship this weekend. * This is Young’s second race back from an injury that kept him out of three rounds of the series. Birmingham, Ala. September 25, 2010 Rockstar Makita Suzuki went 1-2 during Qualifying 1 at Barber Motorsports Park on Friday afternoon, and Blake Young earned the provisional pole with a time of 1:25.775. Teammate Tommy Hayden followed with a second-place finish in the day’s qualifying. Hayden is fighting for the championship this weekend and he’s looking to make up the 22 points the series leader has on him. Young took the opportunity at Friday’s qualifying session to set the tone for the weekend aboard his GSX-R1000. He returned to the series in the beginning of September at the New Jersey round of AMA road racing, scoring two solid fourth-place finishes. Young suffered an injury in June at Barber Motorsports Park, which kept him off the bike, but he kept his focus on racing. “As a racer, it’s hard to sit back and watch guys progress through the season on their bikes when you’re sitting out,” Young said. “This weekend here at Barber, it’s the final race of the season and I want to go out on a good note. I want to do well, but at the same time I have a teammate who’s fighting for the championship. I don’t want to get in the way of his race, but I’m still going to be out there dicing for the lead.” Hayden is currently in second place in the championship points and is looking for a fantastic weekend to finish off his 2010 run. Tommy finished only .164 behind Young in Qualifying 1 and is aiming to be atop the leader board after Saturday morning’s final qualifying session.
