IRVINE, Calif., September 23, 2010 Long-time MSF RiderCoach and quality assurance team member Mark Wing is the new manager of the Discovery Rider Training Center in Long Beach, Calif. Wing brings a diverse background in motorcycle safety to the DRTC, with experience as a certified RiderCoach and training site administrator, plus expertise in improving the delivery of MSF curricula as a part of the QA team for the California Motorcycle Safety Program (CMSP). Wing will coordinate and oversee day-to-day operations of the Discovery site, which provides RiderCourses to the general public through the CMSP. In addition, DRTC functions as a Rider Education System Laboratory, currently conducting “The Longitudinal Study to Improve Crash Avoidance Skills.” Carried out over three years, the $1.2 million joint project is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the MSF. “We’re confident that Mark will further improve the Discovery Rider Training Center,” said Dr. Sherry Williams, director, quality assurance and research at the MSF. “Mark’s extensive knowledge of the curricula, his calm and professional demeanor, and his commitment to student-centered learning principles will benefit the RiderCoaches he mentors and, ultimately, our students.” Certified as an MSF RiderCoach in 2003, Wing expanded his understanding of MSF standards and curricula as a member of the CMSP QA team, continually reviewing MSF content and working with MSF staff. “Working at sites throughout California, Wing gained a broad perspective on coaching practices and site cultures,” Williams said. “At the same time, he ensured adherence to CMSP and MSF policies and procedures and supported RiderCoaches in a positive, proactive manner.” Most recently, Wing was appointed administrative assistant at Bikesmart Motorcycle Training, a CMSP-approved independent training site in the Bay Area. RiderCoaches at Bikesmart were ranked among the top 5 percent in California last year. “As we welcome Mark Wing, we also want to thank RiderCoach Carl Pulley, who served as interim manager and greatly improved many aspects of DRTC operations and facilities, on top of maintaining his regular duties as a full-time associate of American Honda,” Williams said. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation promotes rider safety through rider training systems, operator licensing tests and public information programs. The MSF works with the federal government, state agencies, the military, and others to offer training for all skill levels so riders can enjoy a lifetime of safe, responsible motorcycling. Standards established by the MSF have been internationally recognized since 1973. The MSF is a not-for-profit organization sponsored by BMW, BRP, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory and Yamaha.
