Kazuki WATANABE, Japan (SUTER), 2:00.827 More, from a press release issued by Interwetten Moriwaki Moto2 Team: short but good first practice day for Lüthi at Aragón The first practice day on the Spanish racetrack at Aragón contained different than usual two practice sessions and went very well for Tom Lüthi and the Interwetten Moriwaki Moto2 Team. Rain in the afternoon kept the second free practice shorter than expected and there was not much time left to test anything. But this is not meant to be a test weekend anyway, says Lüthi. The base set up was the same as in Misano and also the rest should not be modified too much this weekend in Aragón and a ninth place in the morning and fourth in the afternoon already paid off this decision. Tom Lüthi, 4 1’56.655: “We don’t look bad here. The plan is not to change too many things this weekend. We want to keep a clean line and don’t want to try around stuff. Until now this decision seems to be good.” Terrell Thien, Team Manager: “We did not run many laps, the second practice was over when it started to rain. But it still looks not bad for us. We already had a good result on the first day today. We were not able to test all the things we had on the list, but that is not meant to be priority this weekend anyway.” More, from a press release issued by Marc VDS Racing Team: TOP TEN FOR REDDING AND FAUBEL AT ARAGON Scott Redding and Hector Faubel both finished inside the top ten after today’s two free practice sessions at the all-new Motorland Aragon circuit, venue for the 12th round of the Moto2 World Championship. Redding posted a fast lap early on in this afternoon’s free practice session, improving on his previous best from this morning and moving up to sixth place on the timesheet. Just minutes after setting his fastest time of the weekend so far, the 17-year-old Marc VDS rider was forced back to the pit box as the rain that had been threatening all morning finally arrived at the Aragon circuit. Faubel also improved his lap time during this afternoon’s free practice session to go tenth on the timesheet. The 27-year-old Spaniard’s performance was even more impressive given that, so far, he’s only been able to complete 13 laps of the Aragon circuit, after a technical problem this morning and the onset of rain this afternoon. Both Marc VDS riders are hoping for an improvement in the weather tomorrow, as more track time in dry conditions is required to refine the set-up of their Suter MMX Moto2 machines to better suit the characteristics of the Aragon circuit. Tyre durability is also a major concern after the cold conditions experienced on track today. Rear tyre wear was higher than expected with both tyre options available to the Moto2 teams, which means that tyre management could be a critical factor should the track temperature not increase significantly for Sunday’s 21-lap Moto2 race. Scott Redding #45: 6th – 1’56.424 “Conditions haven’t been ideal today. In the morning the track was really dirty and you had to be careful whenever you ventured offline and in the afternoon it rained just 20 minutes into the session. The bike actually feels pretty good as it is, we need to improve the feeling from the front a little bit, but the team have that in hand already. What we really need is a full session on a dry track now that some rubber has been laid down. If we get that tomorrow morning then we’ll be in a strong position going into qualifying in the afternoon.” Hector Faubel #55: 10th – 1’56.774 “We had some problems with the bike this morning that meant I only got seven laps in the dry, then the rain this afternoon meant I only managed to complete another six laps. I need more time on the bike because it is very different compared to when we tested here previously. Tenth is not so bad given the lack of track time today, but I need a good first session tomorrow to get the bike set-up properly ahead of qualifying. It can be dry or it can be wet, just as long as it’s one or the other. Obviously I’d prefer a dry session, but I’ll take whatever I can get.” Pete Benson: Scott Redding’s Crew Chief “The track conditions were quite poor today, which exacerbated the problem Scott was having with the front of the bike. We’ve got a couple of changes to make tonight that will give him more confidence in the front, so we’re in pretty good shape for practice and qualifying tomorrow. The only other issue is the track temperature; in today’s cold conditions we’ve had some issues with excessive rear tyre wear and durability could be a big problem should conditions be the same for the race on Sunday.” More, from a press release issued by JiR Moto2 Team: It’s a good weekend’s start at the Aragon GP for Alex De Angelis, who in the second of the two free practice sessions took the second best time with a lap of 1’56″398. With two sessions being run on this new track, his combined best time was the fourth quickest of the day. This is an encouraging result for the rider’s confidence with his JiR MotoBI following the Misano GP. Alex De Angelis “I’m happy for this result, I need to get back in the saddle and regain some trust with the bike and racing and these times give me hope. Also I really enjoyed the circuit. I’ve never ridden here before and for the first time it’s not bad at all. There are both slow technical sections and fast ones where you need to keep the throttle opened, so we’ll need to work hard on set-up. Unfortunately the rain ruined our work, but tomorrow we will make some more steps ahead for sure.” Today saw some issues for Simone Corsi, who managed to ride only five laps before the rain and had some front-end chattering problems. His best time remains the one he scored this morning: 1’57″113. Tomorrow both riders will have the chance of improving their performances, hoping for better weather that gives the team time to find the best set-up for the race.
