TIE, Lance Isaacs/Palumbo, 5 More, from a press release issued by Hannspree Ten Kate Honda: Kenan Sofuoglu pulled off an impressive World Supersport race victory in today’s ninth round at Brno in the Czech Republic, winning by one tenth of a second from fellow championship contender, Joan Lascorz. Sofuoglu’s Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team-mate, Michele Pirro, crashed out of the 18-lap race at the 5.403km Brno circuit, sustaining a broken nose, facial bruising and a fractured right wrist. Starting from the second row of the grid, Sofuoglu finished the first lap in seventh place as the third championship protagonist, Eugene Laverty, led proceedings. By lap three, Sofuoglu had passed Katsuaki Fujiwara and set about hunting down the leading group of riders. On the sixth lap, Laverty developed a technical problem which forced his retirement as Sofuoglu went past fellow Honda-rider Gino Rea into third place before passing Chaz Davies for second one lap later. At that stage, Lascorz was 1.5 seconds ahead of t he Turkish rider, who set about chasing down the Spaniard, setting two fastest laps, before passing him on lap 14 and riding on to his third victory of the season. The win maintains Sofuoglu’s 100% podium record for the 2010 season, extends his record of World Supersport race victories to 17 and gives him a 15-point lead in the championship standings with four rounds remaining. Kenan Sofuoglu 1st It was a very good race today and the bike felt fantastic, but it is really thanks to the hard work that my team did and the Clinica Mobile who looked after me this weekend. We had some real problems with the bike on Friday and yesterday, which led to a bad qualifying session for us and a start from the second row. We saw some potential when I tried two different bikes in warm-up this morning, which gave me the confidence that I needed. When I finally caught Lascorz in the race, I saw that I could win. The other pro blem I had was with my arm which I injured in a scooter crash last week. I have been going to the Clinica a lot and they advised me not to ride, but it was important for the championship to get another win here. I sent my best wishes to Ronald ten Kate, who is not in Brno because father is not very well, but it felt very good to win for him. In the end, it was a really nice weekend and I am very happy. Chaz Davies put in another great performance to take the third podium of the season, after previously finishing third at Valencia and Kyalami as well. The Brit made a good start and got in the leading pack right away, battling with Lascorz, Sofuoglu, Laverty and Rea, and managed to take the second position. Davies battled out for victory until halfway into the race, when a small oil spill, which was dripping on the right footpeg, forced him to up the pace, losing contact with Lascorz and Sofuoglu. After realising he could go on, he engaged in a nice duel with Rea, who tried to pass him for the rest of the race, but never succeeded because Davies defended very well. Positive performances from the other three Triumph riders too as Salom finished eighth, which allowed him to maintain the fifth position in the overall standings, while Lagrive took ninth place and Iannuzzo finished eleventh, after managing to up the pace compared to practice. CHAZ DAVIES | Triumph Daytona 675 | 3rd : “It was an exciting race. I made a very good start and thought I could battle for the victory, but later on I felt the foot slipping, and realised it was an oil spill. I was expecting to high side any moment, but after a couple of laps I figured out it was only a wire drawing and felt comfortable again, although it was hard to push on the slippery footpeg in the right-hand corners . Rea gave me a hard time, but I managed to pass him. This a very important result for me as it comes before my home race at Silverstone, where hopefully many of my fans will turn up”. DAVID SALOM | Triumph Daytona 675 | 8th : “I started in the middle and maintained position, I then managed to pass a few riders, gathering important points in the overall standings. The engine had a slight power drop-off, which prevented me from defending myself from Praia in the uphill sections of the track and so he finished a few tenths of a second in front of me”. MATTHIEU LAGRIVE | Triumph Daytona 675 | 9th : “I made a good start and got behind the second group. I got a better feeling compared to practice and battled Salom and Praia almost until the end”. VITTORIO IANNUZZO | Triumph Daytona 675 | 11th : “I’m happy with the race, I got a good feeling with the bike and posted faster times than expected. Unfortunately, at the start I was involved in Lundh’s crash which made me lose many seconds. I dropped to the seventeenth position but fought back and improved lap after lap, managing to get in the battle for seventh place. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and went wide, so I focused on maintaining the position until the chequered flag”. GIULIANO ROVELLI : “It was hard not to get excited, watching Chaz racing today. He is a tough bloke who always gives 110% and is now the best rider in Supersport. I want to thank the entire team who did a brilliant job at Brno this weekend. They all proved their professionalism by ensuring that we would finish with all four bikes in the top 11. Our home race is at Silverstone and we present ourselves in our best shape yet!”. More, from a press release issued by Kawasaki: So Close to Another Win for Lascorz WSS, Brno, Czech Republic, 11 July 2010 Joan Lascorz led for ten of the 18-laps of the Supersport race at Brno and his team-mate Katsuaki Fujiwara was a strong top five, in what was a positive day of racing for the official Kawasaki squad. Lascorz was starting from pole and looked capable of running away at the front for a time, but the high track temperatures and tough competition from eventual winner Kenan Sofuoglu made the ultimate fight for the win a two rider affair. Joan re-passed Sofuoglu on the final lap, but could not quite get close enough to stay with Sofuoglu when he got back in front. The margin from first to second proved to be only 0.124 seconds, with the third place rider over seven seconds back. A remarkably brave and committed ride from Katsuaki Fujiwara saw him finish fifth, overcoming the lingering physical effects of a very recent appendix operation. He was exhausted at the end of the race, but fought from his second place starting position to go fifth overall. He had a couple of scares in the race and when he realised he could not get back to the top group of riders he kept a good pace to the end and scored 11 valuable points. The result of two strong performances in the ninth round is that Joan is back to second in the championship, 15 points behind Sofuoglu, and Katsuaki jumped from tenth to eighth overall. Joan Lascorz: “We could have won the race today and the Kawasaki was very strong here. We had a good race but I was having trouble with the front-end settings, so it was difficult to stop the bike. It was fine changing direction in the chicanes and going into corners. Kenan rode very well and he made a big pass on the final lap, and it left me too far behind to attack. The rear tyre performance was constant but we had a lot of spinning from the start in this hot weather. I moved up in the championship as well, so a good day for us.” Katsuaki Fujiwara: “I had to push hard but after seven laps it was difficult to control the bike, and I was feeling the effects of my recent illness. About ten laps in the front end tucked really hard in the first corner, so I had to ease my pace and just continue where I was. I am really tired, no power, and I lost three or four kilos of weight since my operation. I got good points for the championship so it was worth it today.”
