Bridgestone WERA National Endurance Series Grattan Raceway Park Belding, Michigan July 3, 2010 Jason DiSalvo, Clinton Seller and Dane Westby rode the Team Zyvax 7 Yamaha YZF-R6 to overall victory in a WERA National Endurance Series 4-hour at Grattan Raceway Park Saturday. DiSalvo and Westby had raced at Grattan before, but South African Seller had not. Team Zyvax 3’s Ben Bostrom and Chris Clark finished second overall, 5 laps behind, on a YZF-R1 Yamaha. Neither Bostrom nor Clark had ever seen the track before the start of practice. The race was shortened from 6 to 4 hours due to loss of Friday’s scheduled all-day practice caused by the application of slippery sealer to Turns 2-3 by track workers on Thursday night; workers needed most of Friday to remove the worst of the uncured sealer and shortening the race allowed additional practice time on Saturday morning. The incident marked at least the fifth time in memory that track workers have applied slippery, traction-reducing/crash-inducing sealer to the track surface shortly before the start of the annual 4th of July WERA National weekend at the Michigan track. Former AMA Champion Kurtis Roberts had planned to use the WERA weekend to shake down a Riders Discount Yamaha Superbike he’ll ride during the upcoming (July 16-18) AMA Pro National at Mid-Ohio, and was then added as a teammate on the Zyvax 3 bike to run with Bostrom and Clark. But like Bostrom and Clark, Roberts had not seen the track before and was not familiar with the racebike. After Friday practice was cancelled and the race was shortened, Roberts said that it made more sense for him to concentrate on the Riders Discount AMA Pro Superbike bike while Bostrom and Clark ran the 4-hour themselves instead of dividing up the reduced available practice time three ways. Only 10 teams started the event, a new series low no doubt influenced by the sealer problem. Updated Provisional 4-Hour Race Results: 1. Team Zyvax 7 (Jason DiSalvo/Clinton Seller/Dane Westby), Yam YZF-R6, Dunlop, Mediumweight Superbike, 174 laps 2.
