Michelin Pro Series Summit Point Cyclefest Summit Point, WV Memorial Day in West Virginia would not be complete without results from the annual Summit Point Cyclefest. The Michelin Pro Series was in town for round 3 of the ASRA sanctioned 2010 sprint series. To start the show SuperStock rolled to the grid. Winchester, Virginia racer Jason Palmer riding a Suzuki took the early lead followed by ASRA champion David Loikits on his Suzuki in close pursuit. But by lap three Summit Point track star Tim Bemisderfer was on his way to the front having passed Loikits. By lap four Bemisderfer was only 400 feet behind Palmer and the pair had opened a 3-second gap on the rest of the field. On lap five Bemisderfer passed Palmer as they approached start finish and it was no looking back for the big Honda rider. Lloyd Bayley also aboard a Suzuki started dead last on the grid, but was making an extraordinary charge, running down Terry Taylor and Loikits as he quickly closed on Palmer. As Bayley and Palmer approached the checkered flag Bayley was just two tenths in arrears taking the third spot on the podium. The second race on the Michelin Pro schedule was the SportBike race pitting Mike Selpe, Ryan Jones, Ryan Paterson and Peter Cramer. On lap two Jones and Paterson came together in turn five causing a red flag and restart of the race using the original grid positions. The racing was close, but a second red flag stopped the race after the field had passed halfway. So at race end, Selpe took the win only 0.017 seconds ahead of Jones. Paterson was a couple tenths behind in third, Cramer just a half second back in fourth and Zsolt Veres was two seconds off the lead in fifth. However, Paterson chalked up a DQ for the first red flag incident in the race and Cramer caused the second red flag, so he was dropped to last place on the lead lap. All this commotion moved Zsolt Veres from fifth to third place. Ryan Jones took the SuperBike win on his Kawasaki 600. Mark Miller, Jr. brought his Suzuki home second and Clinton Wiggins third on another Suzuki. And in ThunderBike Ducati 749 rider Joel Spalding got out to a commanding lead after just four laps at which point his perfect season came to an end. Spalding became the victim of unknown mechanical gremlins that caused him to pull off the track between turns three and four. This development ceded the lead and the win to Joey Thomas of Accident, MD riding a Ducati 1000. Endurance racer Eric Helmbach brought his SV650 in for the second place finish and Ducati rider Max Grant held off local track favorite and Buell rider Art Diaz for the last podium position. American SportBike Racing Association (ASRA) is the parent organization of the Championship Cup Series and sanctions eight Michelin Pro Series and eight Michelin Team Challenge road racing events for 2010. The Championship Cup Series (CCS) is the largest grass roots motorcycle road racing organization in the United States with 4,000 licensed riders and 51 sanctioned events at popular tracks around the country including Road America, Daytona, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Firebird, Heartland Park, and Virginia International among other fine venues.
