Team M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich gave one lucky fan and two San Francisco radio personalities 140-mph guided tours of Infineon Raceway on his two-seat GSX-R1000 AMA Pro American Superbike Thursday. Working at the invitation of Infineon Raceway to help promote this weekend’s West Coast Moto Jam AMA Nationals, Ulrich gave rides to 107.7 KSAN-FM “The Bone” morning show personality Sully Makame, 103.7 KKSF-FM “The Band” evening drivetime host Scott Struber and Silvia Cruz, who won her ride as a prize in a contest put on by KSAN-FM. “I was listening to Sully in the morning, and they asked for the 36th caller,” said Cruz, a resident of South San Francisco who is due to graduate from City College of San Francisco this Saturday. “I was getting ready for school at the time, but I ran out of the bathroom to grab my phone. I called, called, called. I got through once, and Sully said, ‘Thanks for calling.’ And then he hung up on me, so I knew I wasn’t the 36th yet. So I continued to call, and he answered again and asked for my name. That’s when I knew I had won.” Cruz said she rides a cruiser-style motorcycle but has always wanted to come out and experience the racetrack. And she got her wish Thursday, when Ulrich took her for two, 140-mph, wheelie-popping laps of the undulating 2.32-mile road course. “It was great,” she said. “It was everything I always wanted to do on my bike but couldn’t. I could tell he’s done this before. (laughs) Chris knows what he’s doing. I can only hope I’m a small percentage as good as him one day.” Struber had a similar experience and said, “Chris is amazing. Talk about an E-ticket ride. Oh my gosh! Braking at the last second, downshifting, getting into the turns, leaning way over and then gassing it out. It was hard work. I was breathing hard after getting off, and he’s not even breaking a sweat. He’s a Pro. He’s awesome. I can’t wait to tell people about this.” Struber later recorded a podcast with Ulrich, which is available here (~http://www.1037theband.com/pages/struber.html~). Makame invited Ulrich to call into his show, “Lamont & Tonelli,” on Friday morning. Both radio stations sent photographers to shoot photos and videos for their respective websites. ‘It was great that we got to open some more eyes to the wonderful world of motorcycle road racing,” said Ulrich. “It’s always fun to show people what the Team M4 Monster Energy Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike is capable of with two people on it and how cool this sport is. “It was also cool to be a part of a contest prize for a fan like that. Silvia said she rides a cruiser, but I think we may have converted her to a sportbike fan today. I’m just glad I was able to give her a fun thrill ride and help promote the races here at Infineon Raceway.” Ulrich and his team have been giving media representatives rides on two-seat racebikes for many years as a way of educating and interesting them in motorcycle road racing.
