Eric Bostrom, a 15-time AMA Superbike race winner and two-time Championship runner-up, is likely to come back from his self-imposed one-year exile to race a Suzuki GSX-R1000 magazine project bike in as many as three AMA Pro Racing National Guard American Superbike rounds this season. Bostrom, now 33 years old, announced at the end of the 2008 season that he was taking “a hiatus” from racing to run a fruit farm he and his older brother Ben Bostrom had purchased in Brazil. A call to Eric Bostrom’s cell phone was not immediately returned, but a call to Attack Performance’s Richard Stanboli, the Crew Chief for the effort, was revealing. “We’re doing a project with Cycle World magazine and Yoshimura,” said Stanboli. “It’s just a magazine project. We’re doing a buildup on a Suzuki GSX-R1000, a 2009. It’s gonna use our bodywork and our billet stuff, and we’re building it at our new tuning center.” Stanboli told Roadracingworld.com that several riders had been considered to race the machine at various stages of the project, from Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp to 2009 AMA SuperSport National Champion Leandro Mercado to current AMA SuperSport competitor Cameron Beaubier, but it now appears that Bostrom will race the project bike, if some final minor details can be worked out. “Eric said, yes, he’s going to do it,” said Stanboli. “I think Eric got tired of just hanging out and not riding anything. Plus, I think he liked the idea of it being part of a charitable thing.” The Superbike will be raffled or auctioned off at the conclusion of the project with the proceeds going to a to-be-determined charity, according to Stanboli. “The first race should be Laguna Seca,” said Stanboli. “It will be three races. Tentatively, it’s Laguna Seca, VIR and the last one, Barber. The points obviously aren’t real big to us. We just want to see how fast we can go with a homologated motorcycle and have some fun.”
