Speed Tech Racing’s Jason Farrell kicked off his season in high gear at the first round of the CCS Midwest Regional & ASRA combined event at Heartland Park Raceway. Riding on his US Chrome / Line 2 Line sponsored Kawasaki ZX6R he nearly won all 15 events he entered, taking (9)regional 1st place, (4) regional 2nd place finishes, winning both ASRA Superbike & Supersport & breaking the CCS/ASRA overall track record & ASRA race lap time records in the process. Quite an impressive feat, since he has only raced at that track one time previously in 1995 on the old track configuration, and riding in subpar conditions all weekend. After racing the 2009 Kawasaki ZX6R last season he was able to make calculated adjustments to the bike for the 2010 season. Those adjustments that were made proved to be worthy as he didn’t make any fine tuning adjustments throughout the weekend except one gearing change. Jason has many loyal sponsors that have helped him throughout the season and worked with him to better his machine which makes riding the bike much easier. One of Speed Tech Racing’s previous sponsors US Chrome Cylinder Plating of Fond du Lac, WI has really stepped up to the plate along with Line 2 Line Coatings to be able to help him make it to all the events. Further research & fine tuning as netted him more horsepower across the powerband also. Jason made friends with the race track early on in the weekend as he really liked the layout. These kinds of tracks with elevation changes & switchback turns suit his style. Track conditions were not up to par as it was “green” all weekend due to rain every night, leaving the track damp in many places with no rubber laid down. The green conditions were spooking most riders but didn’t bother Jason, a former dirt tracker in his younger years. “I like these conditions a lot. Its one area I have always done pretty well at with reading the available traction in damp conditions. The 30 plus mph winds took a little getting used to on Sunday as it switched from a South wind Saturday to a North Wind on Sunday. I was getting blown all over the place in the first couple races on Sunday” said Jason. Running 15 races in one weekend was a tall order as Jason had not run that many races in one weekend before. He managed them all well and his mechanics Mike Krause & Kevin Andrews had a good plan in place to keep the bike up to par with good tires & a proper fuel load to pass post tech inspection in the ASRA races. Running at a fast pace started to tear up the tires as there was no rubber down on the track surface. Working with Pirellis Kevin Graham of Canada they were able to find a great combination of tire compound to still be able to lay down some great lap times. Jason set pole position in both qualifying sessions for ASRA Superbike & Sportbike at the end of the day on Saturday on the same used Pirelli tires. For the ASRA races on Sunday he used a green front DOT in both races and Blue 180 DOT tire in both races. He set the track record for both races in subpar track conditions and won by over 14 seconds & 5 seconds in each race. “That was the goal. Win the race & take home a record along with it! I never slowed down or looked back the whole race. I wanted to hit my marks and put in a good ride. These Pirelli tires are unbelievable! It’s cool that we could win the races by a large margins & set records for my sponsors as well! My Kawasaki ZX6R is the best bike I have ever raced in my life. I couldn’t put a wheel wrong all weekend unless I fell asleep”, said Jason. Jason also broke the overall fastest lap record ever record by CCS/ASRA with a 1:39.864 after the ASRA race while racing in the Heavyweight Superbike race when his margin over victory was 28 seconds in 7 laps. “In that race Kevin Graham of Pirelli & I tried the new rear tire for 2010 from Pirelli. It’s the new Yellow with a Green front & I couldn’t believe it! Every lap of the race I was under my previous ASRA record earlier. I settled in the 39’s till I back off to take a 28 second victory! The bike just kept turning in and hooking up. I couldn’t believe my lean angles. I felt I still had at least 1 more second to gain on that tire since I wasn’t used to it yet”, said Jason. The combination between man and machine was a stellar one. It takes a great rider, bike, & crew to pull off wins & records like those. The ZX6R was equipped with the new Race Tech BPF fork kit up front. “They definitely got it right when they made this kit for the new fork design. My bike was on rails! It was so smooth through the transitions and it held a line much better. Everything was better. I still have quite a bit more speed left in me on these new forks”, said Jason. VP Racing Fuels new MR12 was worth 3% more power during testing in bikes over the previous MR11 & MR9 fuels. VP has really stepped up and made a great fuel yet again! Speed Tech is also a distributor of the VP Racing Fuel line. US Chrome does all of Speed Tech Racing’s Cylinder Bore Plating for race bikes & customer bikes. Their coatings are harder, longer lasting & consistent than other cylinder plating companies when have worked with in the past. Line2Line coatings has found new advancements in piston coatings of which are far superior than standard OEM coatings. Speed Tech is working with Line2Line in testing their coatings in R&D development on their dyno. There is some serious longevity & HP found with these coatings. I believe they are on to something really good, not just for racing but for OEM equipment on new vehicles. Speed Tech would also like to note that sponsored rider Brian Hall also had a stellar weekend winning the ASRA Superstock race on his Schaumburg Audi /Speed Tech Racing prepped Kawasaki ZX10R , placing 2nd in the ASRA Superbike event making it a Speed Tech Kawasaki ZX6R 1-2 finish & taking home (10) 1st place & (5) 2nd place finishes in the regional events. “This ZX10R is killer! It’s so fast! I’m just getting back up to speed at the first race this season. I had a spill on Friday practice in turn 1. My hand was pretty sore all weekend, but I was able to get the bike back together & deal with the pain throughout the weekend. I’d like to thank my father Mike & brother Scott for all their support this weekend”, said Brian. Between Jason & Brian they won over 21 races & place 2nd in 9 races. That’s a good start to the season. Speed Tech Racing is a subsidy of Speed Tech Motorsports owned by Jason Farrell. More, from a press release issued by Mojotown: Where: Infineon Raceway – Sonoma, California When: April 25th, 2010 Organization: American Federation of Motorcycles – AFM Class: Formula 2 (250 GP) Mojotown wins Formula 2 with an Impressive Lead. The second round of the AFM regional series began with a bumpy start for team Mojotown. The plan was for owner Michael Aron to ride his freshly rebuilt RS250, and put the shop’s young gun, Tyler Reiswig, on the RS125. The plan was quickly dashed when an internal bolt let go on the 125. Without the parts to put it back together in time, team owner Michael Aron decided to give up his 250 ride and put Tyler to the test on the RS250. Starting from the last spot on the grid (15th), Tyler made quick work of the field moving into the middle of the pack before turn 2 at the beautiful sweeping Infineon Raceway. Approaching the chicane in turn 9, Tyler had moved into 3rd place, and upon exiting the tight hairpin at turn 11, popped out of the draft and left the rest of the group behind for good. By the end of lap 2, Tyler opened up an impressive lead which continued to grow to a comfortable margin of 5 seconds when he finally took the checkered flag. The win is the first for the new Mojotown Motorcycle Gear Shop. “It was really strange for me to sit on the sidelines and watch; it’s been years since I had to do that”, commented Aron, a long-time fixture in AFM racing and a former crew member of Fast By Ferracci Ducati. “It was time to let someone else ride our team bike, and Tyler is an extremely talented young rider. I knew he would go quick, and I knew the bike had the steam since it was recently put back together with the help of Roland Cushway, the ultimate 2-stroke guru.” Mojotown is best known for website design and motor sports marketing with clients such as Mat Mladin, Fast by Ferracci, Top 1 Oil and Rich Oliver to name a few. Last year Michael opened up Mojotown Motorcycle Gear, located in San Rafael, Ca. More, from a press release issued by SRA-West: SRA-West Rounds 2-3 AHRMA Moto Classica Willow Springs Raceway Rosamond, Ca April 23-25 By John Cameron The first double-header weekend in the SRA-West 2010 championship saw the top spot of the podium traded to the delight of a large crowd on hand at the AHRMA Moto Classica. The vintage racing series gave a huge welcome to the modern sidecar class, which arrived to the event with fresh sponsorship from Barnett Clutches. Front runner Wade Boyd was not in attendance, leaving hardcore fans to wonder if defending champion Becker Moto Works would have an easy victory. However, the fledglings of Team Johnny Killmore got a fantastic start from the front row and pulled out a noticeable lead on cold tires. The six lap race would be led flag-to-flag by the John Wood/ Vanessa McClure team, but the father/son team of William and Eric Becker showed no quarter. Waiting for their Hoosier tires to warm up toward the end, Becker began banging on the back door on the third lap. Wood held his line against the assault, trying to work lapped traffic to his advantage. Becker forced his way to the inside several times, but struggled for grip off the race line. With a final attempt made on the last corner, it became a drag race to the finish, with Wood taking his first win by only two lengths. Sunday’s race would have the same start, but a lap-one mistake by Wood left the door wide open for Becker to take an early lead. A huge slide in turn five showed he was not waiting around for the tires to warm up this time! The veteran Becker was hounded by Wood for the first 2 laps, attempting a pass in turn 3, but a miscue would cause him to fall back. As the tires came up to temperature, Becker pulled away, only to be caught in lapped traffic. Again Becker pulled a gap, and again lapped traffic would hold him up. In the final lap the two would remain about five lengths apart to the checkers. Afterward, Wood remained humble in pit lane. “I just raced against my mentor. I rode faster than I ever have and brought my bike in without a scratch. I’m totally ecstatic,” he said. William Becker wouldn’t be quoted, but alluded to the fact he thought there was one more lap on Saturday. The rumor leaves the possibility he had more to offer. With next month’s return of Subculture Racing’s Wayde Boyd/Christine Blunk, an already exciting season is looking to get even harder to predict. Also of note was eventual 3rd place finisher (on both days) Bad Cat Racing. The Mike Jones/Cindy Creech team was out of striking distance, but closed a huge gap from previous rounds, while being the fastest machine on Yokahama rubber. The SRA-West will return to Willow Springs May 15-16 for their last event at that course until October. Find their full schedule at www.sra-west.us.
