FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: It is interesting to see Ducati’s new frameless motorcycle patent. In 1988 at Daytona in the Battle of the Twins race I remember seeing the Quantel Cosworth Norton racebike that was raced by Paul Lewis and sponsored by Skoal Bandit. The team’s mentor was Sir John Surtees, the only man to win a Formula One motorcycle and Formula One car world championships. The Quantel Cosworth Norton racer had two cylinders, or half of a Cosworth 2-liter DOHC race engine. The engine was mated to a Norton transmission. This was joined to the front forks by a massive triangulated box plate, similar to Ducati’s new patent. The rear swingarm and wheel assembly bolted to the rear of the motor. The beautiful one piece bodywork of seat, fuel tank, and fairing covered all this marvelous machine work very nicely to produce a very fast racing piece of artwork with the wonderful sound of a booming Cosworth Twin.
