AMA Superbike series racer Shawn Higbee pushed his way past a struggling Karl Lowry on the fourth lap and was never headed en route to the Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula One race win at the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club meeting this weekend.

Higbee, on a Moto Forza-backed, Dunlop-shod Ducati 1098, held off a late charge by fellow AMA Superbike racer “Aussie” Dave Anthony to win the 12-lap, 30-mile Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula One race, turning a best time of 1:21.063 en route to the win.

“We made some headway with the set-up, and just kept going,” Higbee said from the top of the podium. “To be up here it feels good.”

Anthony, on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 with Pirelli tires, set the fast lap of the race a 1:20.943. Anthony could catch Higbee in the tighter sections of the course, but Higbee got better drives out of the corners leading onto Willow’s long back and front straights, and that’s what counts at Willow. On the last lap, Anthony made a charge, but Higbee held off Anthony at the line by 0.109-second.

Lowry, on a Graves Motorsports-backed, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1, was third, fighting chatter and a front end that was visibly unstable. Another AMA Superbike racer, Reno Karimian, finished in fourth, ahead of Chris Duran and Steve Atlas.

Higbee was the dominant force at Willow this weekend. On a Yamaha YZF-R6, Higbee held off Duran for the win in 600 Modified Production and beat Bryce Prince to the win in 650 Superbike. Higbee also set a new class lap record 1:21.622 en route to the win in Heavyweight Twins. On his Graves-backed, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6, Lowry set a new lap record 1:21.798 for the 600 Superstock class.

More, from a press release issued by Moto Forza:

Shawn Higbee and Moto Forza Ducati 1098R on top of the podium in Formula 1 at WSMC

Shawn Higbee rode the Moto Forza backed Ducati 1098R to a win in WSMC’s premier class. This is only the second time ever a Ducati won the Formula 1 class at Willow Springs. Setting a best lap time of 1:21.063 he was victorious by just over 0.1-second over David Anthony. WSMC Champion Karl Lowry rounded out the podium.

Shawn Higbee also won the Battle of the Twins Heavyweight class on the Ducati 1098R, setting a new class lap record of 1:21.622. Shawn also won the 600 Modified Production and the 650 Superbike races and came second in the 600 Superstock race. The 4 wins and 1 second place finish catapulted Sawn Higbee into a solid lead in the WSMC overall point standing.

Shawn and Moto Forza are now preparing for the AMA Superbike races at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana this coming weekend. For more information visit www.moto-forza.com .
