Despite the current economic conditions, the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association posted impressive numbers at its 2010 series opener at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas, this weekend, with a total of 548 sprint entries and 75 endurance teams gracing the grids on a weekend that started out overcast and damp, but eventually turned into a beautiful weekend for racing. KTM-backed Ty Howard kicked off the season in style by sweeping the 1000cc Expert races. The Weatherford, Texas resident rode a KTM RC8 to dominating wins in the RaceworX A Superstock, AVTEQ A Superbike and Formula 1 races. “I’m really pleased with the bike the RC8,” said Howard. “I didn’t have time to get my sprint bike ready so I rode the bike we won the endurance race on yesterday. I was able to run in the 43s and I really think with a dry track we could have set some records.” Another rider getting off to an impressive start was Oklahoman Dustin Dominguez, who claimed wins in the South Center Race Center C Superstock, SA Superbike B Superbike, and D Superstock races. Dominguez lost out in the Island Racing C Superbike race to Kansas City’s Matt Hall, who also won the LMStrackdays.com B Superstock race. Chris Romeo was another three-time winner, claiming wins in the Exel Transportation F2, Lightweight Twins and D Superbike Expert races. Meanwhile, Conner Blevins won the highly competitive 125 GP race over Peter Lenz and James Camacho Jr. The CMRA introduced a new class for 2010, the Rookie Expert class, which is for first-year experts. The inaugural race was won by Alonzo Contreras on a GSXR600, with Blake Cochran (Suz GSXR600) and Scott Buckley (Suz GSXR600) rounding out the podium. In the Novice divisions, Jeremy Louder posted three wins (Road & Track Suspension Formula 1, A Superbike and Road & Track Suspension A Superstock), while John Keene (B Superbike, Ridesmart C Superstock) and Jordan Scott (Road & Track Suspension D Superbike, Ridesmart Lightweight Twins) each had two wins. In Saturday’s Big Bike Endurance race, Ty Howard teamed with Bryan West and Ricky Jordan to take the win for Team Ridesmart/RPM Cycle on Howard’s RC8. The trio suffered fuel pump problems midway into the race, but rallied during the late stages, passing CS Carey Racing with 12 laps to go in the 4-hour race to take the lead and eventually the win. CS Carey Racing (Chris Carey, Greg Anderson, Matt Hall, Brent Wood, Gabe McClendon) held on for second, while Moto Ace (Derek Wagnon, Jeremy Kidd, Joe Prussiano, Dustin Dominguez) finished third. The top three teams all finished on the lead lap, turning 100 circuits around Texas World Speedway’s high-banked course. Village Idiots (John Orchard, Chris Headley, Chad Tieszen, Brandon Cleland) claimed the C Superbike class win with a fifth overall finish, while Faltless Racing (Eric Falt, Robert Bradlaw, Clayton Schutz) won the F2 division in seventh. Hyper Cycle (Gilbert Lee Epperson, David Wilson, Michael Humphries, Karl Hansen) won the newly formed Classic Endurance class on a CBR600F3 with a 24th place finish. Meanwhile, in the two-hour CMRA Formula Mini Endurance race, eurtoast (Zeb Harris, James Erwin, Alan Phillips) beat out Howlie Boyz (Dean Thimjon, Jason Swan, Kurt Stock) for the win took the win, with Team Gleam (Marcus Beedle, Conner Blevins) finishing third. Eurtoast and Howlie Boyz rode EX250s, while Team Gleam competed on a Honda RS85. Top Dog Racing (Challen Tennant, Taylor Myers) took the win in the F5 division on a KLX140. Meanwhile, KSDS (Pat Brown, Richard Eads) rode a Honda NS50R to a 23rd overall finish to win the F6 class. The F7 class was won by Underground Minis (Dustin Sperry, Wyatt Sperry, Jay Newton) on a Honda NSF100. The CMRA returns to action on March 12-14 for the second round of its series at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, Texas, for a full slate of sprint racing action, in addition to a six-hour Endurance race.
