WMRRA concluded its 2009 season this past weekend with Round 8 at Pacific Raceways. Going into the final weekend, the overall championship was separated by just 16 points between Eli Edwards and Ross DeLong. On Saturday, Eli Edwards had a fierce battle with current #1 plate holder Oliver Jervis but held him to finish undefeated in 600 Supersport this season and continue his point margin lead. That did not last for long, as Ross DeLong did his job by winning the 750 Supersport race. Edwards finished third, shrinking his points lead in the overall championship to 2 points. On Sunday, with just a 2 point lead, Edwards once again had a back and forth battle with current #1 plate holder, Oliver Jervis in the 600 Superbike race. In a must win race (or lose the #1 plate), Eli showed why he was deserving of the #1 plate this season by going on to with the 600 Superbike race and secure the WMRRA #1 plate for the 2nd time in the last 4 years. With the #1 plate being decided by just 2 points, it was the smallest margin in the history of WMRRA. It was also the largest number of points accumulated by the top 2 riders of the club, collectively winning 47 races and accumulating over 1800 points. Eli Edwards concluded his season undefeated in 600 Supersport and 600 Superbike and an impressive 22 wins across four of WMRRA’s premier classes. Ross DeLong won 4 class championships while racking up 25 race wins. After a very long and successful career, both on the club and national level, Mike Sullivan raced in his final race. Mike leaves after close to 30 years of racing and numerous #1 plates, race wins, and national race series to his credit. Mike was a class act, a great competitor, and an excellent teacher/mentor to many during his career. He will be missed on the grid.
