Superb win for Reeves on Oliver’s Mount debut Tim Reeves spread his real road racing wings a little further at the weekend when the triple World Sidecar Champion made his debut at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough for the International Gold Cup races. The 2.43-mile public road circuit is notoriously tricky for the F2 Sidecars but despite never having seen the circuit before practice on Saturday and having a last-minute substitute passenger in the shape of Dipash Chauhan, Tim showed his undoubted class when he recorded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the three races whilst the new pairing were also able to set the fifth fastest time ever recorded around the woodland circuit, a superb debut indeed. With Daniel Sayle being forced to pull out of the meeting at the 11th hour, the experienced Chauhan answered an SOS call to partner Tim and the first time the duo competed together was in Saturday morning’s opening practice session. It didn’t take long for them to soon get an understanding nor Tim get to grips with the circuit and a time of 1m59.201s in qualifying saw them line up in third place on the grid for all three races. In the opening race on Saturday, Tim took a solid third place as he reduced his lap times by a further second whilst he also saw the importance of getting a good start with room for overtaking extremely tricky. On Sunday, a superb crowd of 52,000 race fans flocked to the seaside town and Tim was keen to improve on Saturday’s performance and make a further impression on the results sheets. Sure enough, in the opening 6-lap race, he moved up to second immediately and from here he pressurised Tony Elmer/Darren Marshall all the way as he set what would prove to be his best lap of the weekend, 1m56.982s. Try as he might, he couldn’t find a way by the wily Elmer and he had to settle for second at the chequered flag, just 0.733s adrift. That just left the third and final race and a brilliant start saw Tim overhaul both Elmer and pole setter Conrad Harrison and whilst the tight hairpins continued to cause a few hair raising moments, Tim was able to control the race and with the fastest lap, he ran out a comfortable winner by 4.077 seconds to crown a fantastic weekend of racing. Speaking later Tim said, “It’s been an absolutely brilliant meeting this weekend and all I can really say is, wow, what an awesome circuit! It’s been superb from start to finish and I’m so glad I came and raced here – I loved the circuit from the very start and have enjoyed myself immensely. To get 52,000 people shows the high regard that people have of the races at Scarborough and I’ve got to say a big thank you to Peter Hillaby and the club for all their hard work and for making me feel so welcome, I’ve already made my mind up that I’m going to be back next year. The races themselves saw me have good battles in all of them, particularly with Tony and Darren, but we had a problem with the brake disc in the second and had to patch it up for the third so I was only just able to make it to the finish. If it hadn’t been for that I think I could have done a low ’56 lap but, overall, to come away with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd, is fantastic. A big thanks to Dips as well for stepping in at the 11th hour, he did a superb job for me and it was great to have him on board and share in the success.” After Scarborough, Tim headed to the Stoke speedway ground on Monday where he joined fellow road racer John McGuinness on the shale for his first ever try on the unique machines. With expert tuition from Joe Screen and Peter Carr, Tim put in a number of laps on the 500cc-engined machines although as he explains, it’s not for the faint-hearted. “Blimey, speedway bikes are a totally different animal to anything else I’ve ever had a go on and my respect for speedway racers has gone through the roof – they’re heroes as far as I’m concerned. I began to pick it up a little bit as the day wore on but I won’t be giving up the day job just yet!” Tim will be back to familiar surroundings this weekend when he takes part in the F2 Sidecar invitation race at the Silverstone British Superbike meeting.
