Toye Breaks Lap Record, Turpin Wraps Up MoM/UtahSBA Championship At Miller

(Tooele, UT) Jeremy Toye had no problem getting up to pace for Masters of the Mountain Round 6, even though it was his first time on Miller Motorsports Park’s West Course and his second time on the track. Toye held points leader Shane Turpin at bay with wins in the premier King of the Mountain GTO race and set a new Miller West Course record of 1:29.339 in Open Superbike. In KoM GTO, Turpin got the hole-shot from Toye and lead the first lap, with Toye passing Turpin in lap 2 exiting “Blackrock Hairpin.” Building a half-second lead for the 14 lap race, Toye could never shake Turpin, but Turpin could never get past with them both running one-half-second off of lap-record pace. Toye’s Lee’s Cycle Dunlop-shod CBR1000RR was a missile and proved to have the speed and traction to rally for the win. In Open Superbike, Toye started 12th on the grid, had a rocket start and by the second lap he had his head down and was hunting leader Turpin, setting a new lap record in the process. On lap 5 Toye got by Turpin in “Blackrock” and railed to a win by .285 seconds. “This is the first time I’ve run this configuration (Miller’s West Course). It’s a fun, physical track … I like it,” said Toye. “I ran part of it with WERA this year, but I had a lot to learn on the new sections. At this point I come out here to help guys like Jimmy (Jimmy Wood) and demonstrate our work at Lee’s Cycle. I think our results speak for themselves. I hope to be out here again for the last round in October and do some testing with Dunlop. Thanks to Dunlop, Shoei, GPR stabilizers and Maxima Oils.” Turpin seemed to have an off-weekend compared to his usual dominance, taking second in KoM GTO, Open Superbike, KoM GTU and Open Superstock, with wins in SuperTwins and Formula40, and mechanical troubles in Twins GTU and Endurance. But wise veteran racer Turpin had his eye on the season, wrapping up the overall 2009 championship and the coveted #1 plate for 2010. “It was a good weekend,” said Turpin. “There were a lot of fast guys out here and I rode as hard as I could. Toye and Jimmy were running a really quick pace. I didn’t want to do something stupid and throw it on the ground, so I had to pick my battles and keep my eye on the title.” Turpin had a strong season wrapping up the overall championship in the MRA last month, and winning the Masters of the Mountains overall championship with one round remaining. The only undecided title is in King of the Mountain GTU where Turpin is battling Kory Cowan to the last round. “It’s been an awesome season and everything went well,” said Turpin. “With the economy the way it is, everyone is struggling. My sponsors really stepped up this year to make this happen. There are so many good people to thank “¦ Miller Motorsports Park and the UtahSBA, Bell Helmets, Dan Kyle, EBC Brakes, Fox, Matt Spencer and Salt Lake Motorsports, Michelin and Fast Line Race Tire, Oakley, Performance Friction Brakes, Pikes Peak Harley Davidson, Specialized Bicycles, TCX Boots, Vanmar Racing, Wired Energy Drinks, the Kitt family and Jim Davis for loaning me his R6 this weekend. I couldn’t do it without this kind of support.” The middleweight races were barnburners, with Turpin, Jimmy Wood, Brant Wiwi, Oleg Pianykh, Kory Cowan, Dave Lewis and Mike Sullivan giving the Miller spectators quite a show. Jimmy Wood took his Lee’s Cycle Kawasaki ZX6 to impressive wins in Middleweight Superbike, King of the Mountain GTU and Middleweight Superstock. Veteran Mike Sullivan grabbed podium spots in hard-fought battles in Open Superbike, KoM GTU, Middleweight Superstock, and KoM GTO and got a win in Open Superstock. The seven-race Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains series, developed by Miller Motorsports Park, organized by the Utah Sportbike Association (USBA) and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), was created to encourage and develop fun and competitive road racing at the club and regional levels. In its forth year, the series has quickly turned into a premier event drawing top-level talent from around the nation.
