Turpin Wins Seven UtahSBA/MOM Races At Miller Motorsports Park

(Tooele, UT) Shane Turpin continued his impressive record of wins in the 2009 Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains roadrace series, despite a near-catastrophic mechanical failure and DNF in the King of the Mountain GTU race. Turpin jumped out to a six-second lead in the first two laps of the race running nearly three seconds a lap faster than the closest competitor on Miller Motorsports Park’s East Course. On lap three entering “The Attitudes,” the motor in Turpin’s Triumph 675 let go nearly causing a highside.

With Turpin out, Canada’s Jesse Sherstan took his solid second place into significant lead over Kory Cowan. Cowan put his head down and reeled-in Sherstan, but couldn’t get past. Sherstan took the win and prize money by a tight .66 second victory.

Even with the setback in KoM GTU, Turpin won the endurance race with team captain Kel Davidson, SuperTwins, Open Superbike, Twins GTU, Heavyweight Superstock, KoM GTO, and Formula 40 for an impressive seven wins in eight starts.

The best battle of the day was in Middleweight Superbike where Oleg Pianykh fought with David Lewis all the way to the line to win by .06 seconds, with Sherstan and Cowan taking third and forth.

With the USGPRU at Miller joining the USBA race weekend, there was plenty of talent on display with young kids on small bikes roughing up seasoned Masters of the Mountain veterans.

In Twins GTU, Miles Thornton and Benny Young ran their Aprilia RSW125s to second and third behind Turpin, edging out Shannon Moham for a podium spot. A 250GP class will be added to the last round of Masters on the Mountain on October 3-4 on Miller’s Full Course.

“I’d like to thank Jill Giles and Dan Kyle for all their help last weekend,” said Turpin. “The Buell took me to a Heavyweight Superstock win, so special thanks to Pikes Peak Harley Davidson and my sponsors, Redline Oil, Vortex, TCX Boots and EBC Brakes. I’ve got a few Yamaha Champions schools to teach, then it’s off to High Plains Raceway for the last MRA round on August 29. It’s been a good season.”

The seven-race Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains series, developed by Miller Motorsports Park, organized by the Utah Sportbike Association (USBA) and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), was created to encourage and develop fun and competitive road racing at the club and regional levels. In its fourth year, the series has quickly turned into a premier event drawing top-level talent from around the nation.
