After Josh Hayes won Saturday’s AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike race over Championship point leader Mat Mladin at VIRginia International Raceway, several interested parties began to work on the scenarios necessary for Mladin to wrap up his record-extending seventh Superbike title. But the fact of the matter is Mladin doesn’t have to do anything Sunday to clinch the Championship. The only way Mladin can not clinch the number one plate is if he scores no points and his Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate Tommy Hayden (who is currently second in the Championship standings) wins the race. Coming into Sunday’s action, Mladin holds a 92-point lead over Hayden, the only rider who still has a mathematical chance of winning the title. With only two races remaining after the VIR round and a maximum of 63 points available to win by any one rider, if Mladin has a 63-point lead on Hayden at the end of Sunday he is the Champion. (Mladin would win any tie-breaker scenario based on his number of race wins this year, 10.) This means that if Hayden does not score 30 points (the amount awarded for a win) and reduce his deficit to 62 points on Sunday the Championship is over. In other words, Mladin does not even have to ride to clinch the Championship Sunday at VIR.
