Australian Mat Mladin can clinch his record-extending seventh AMA American Superbike Championship in Saturday’s 23-lap race at VIRginia International Raceway, but it all depends on where he and his Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate Tommy Hayden finish. If Mladin wins the race (regardless of whether he gets the bonus point for leading the most laps or not), Hayden must finish third or better to prevent Mladin from clinching the Championship. If pole-sitter Josh Hayes wins Saturday’s race and leads the most laps and Mladin finishes second, Hayden must finish sixth or better to prevent Mladin from wrapping up the title. If Hayes wins Saturday’s race and Mladin finishes second and gets the bonus point for leading the most laps, Hayden must be fifth or higher to keep his Championship hopes alive. There are, of course, many more possible scenarios.
