Noyes Second on Extreme Grid in Valencia Kenny Noyes (Palmeto Kawasaki) will start from second on the grid in Sunday’s 1000cc Extreme race at Valencia. The Barcelona-based American was only fifth in the cooler morning session, spending most of the session in the pits as the team worked to solve a glitch with the new motor that had been installed overnight. It wasn´t until after the session that mechanics got the ZX-10R on full song and that left Noyes to try and improve his time in the hot (94 degree) afternoon final session. After moving up to fourth, he fitted a second Michelin qualifying tire and advanced to second, missing the pole by only 0.099 The pole went to Bernat Martínez (T.B.Yamaha) with reigning National Extreme Champion Carmelo Morales (Siemens Gigaset Yamaha) and four time Spanish Extreme Champion José David de Gea (Motorrad Suzuki) completing the front row. Although Noyes just missed the pole, his qualifying record lap of 1´34.805 set last year was unbeaten. Starting fifth, a racing in the Moto2 sub-class for 600cc prototypes, Aleix Espargaró, fourth two weeks ago in 250cc at the Grand Prix of The Netherlands. The Spanish Federation and Dorna, in order to promote the new Moto2 class that will replace the classic 250 series in the World Championship in 2010, are allowing Moto2 600s to participate in 1000cc Extreme. Noyes and Espargaró were the only two rider off the front two rows to improve their times on the 110 degree surface. Sunday’s race starts at 10:30 and will be shown on Spain´s TVE-2. We ran a fresh motor yesterday in free practice, but our data showed it was down a bit on power so we put our Jerez motor back in and it was a little quicker right from the start, but after a lap it started giving some trouble and stumbling a bit off the corners. I was in and out of the pits as the guys tried to find the problem and finally we decided to throw in a qualifying tire and try and get a decent lap in. I managed to take fifth best time at 1´35.3 and was off the front row. The technicians found the glitch in time for the final session, but by then the track was very hot. Finally, after I managed a front row time, we decided to make one last run and we almost got the pole.” “On race tires we have a good pace and so far we have not had much chatter. Michelin brought a new front that the Kawasaki likes a lot, but I still feel we are not taking full advantage of the qualifying tires. That is something we have to work on. Anyway we have been on the front row for every race this year and tomorrow we need a good start so we can be with the lead group”¦it could be a four or five bike battle and we aim to be there at the end to fight for the win.”
