Tyngsboro, Mass. native Shane Narbonne made an inside pass on turn six of New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s 12-turn road course on the final lap to win the 86th Annual Loudon Classic.

Narbonne, 19, passed Dunbarton NH’s Scott Greenwood in the closing moments of the race to win his first Loudon Classic. The two riders dueled for the majority of the 20-lap race, steadily pulling away from Loudon, N.H. prodigy Christian Cronin.

“I knew I could do it at the end of the race,” said Narbonne. “I knew if I passed Scotty too early he’d pass back. So I went with the flow and followed him to see where he was strong and where he wasn’t. It’s so hard to pass Scotty.”

“I could hear him behind me,” said Greenwood. “Late in the race he caught up. I was better on the brakes but he was better overall.”

Narbonne was the pole sitter to start the Classic, and was expected to receive strong competition from Cronin and Winchendon, Mass.’s Jeff Wood. But when Wood was scratched from the race with a shoulder injury and Cronin was bumped out of position on the race’s very first turn, Narbonne built a quick lead.

Greenwood passed the pole sitter for first place on lap four and led all the way to the last half-lap. The two battled for position, pulling away from the rest of the pack.

Cronin is the first Loudon resident to ever finish in the top three of the Loudon Classic.

“It’s great,” said Cronin of his finish. “I live across the street pretty much so it feels good.”

Narbonne piloted the DAS Performance Suzuki GSX-R600; Greenwood the Argo Cycles Kawasaki ZX6-R. Christian Cronin rode his Chronic Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6. All three raced on Dunlop DOT labeled race tires. The track surface was dry.

New Hampshire’s Brett Guyer took the holeshot aboard his Seacoast Sport Cycle/Dunlop Ducati Classic and steadily stretched his lead for 15 laps in a dominant performance. Riding his Spears Racing/Ted Temple/NEP/Woodcraft Suzuki SV650 on Dunlop slicks, Todd Babcock dug deep to hang with Guyer but came up short. Meanwhile, Thunderbike title contender, Joel Spaulding of Huntley, Ill did well to grab the last podium spot aboard his Integrity Design/Michelin Buell. He took third early, but had to withstand a race-long attack from young Scotty Mullin riding his Souhegan Valley Motorsports /Dunlop Kawasaki EX650.

Spaulding: “I’ve never been to a track like this. It’s so hard. I’ve never seen a bowl before! I’ve been trying to learn it, making small gains every session, but it’s been tough. The local riders have been terrific, though. They helped me a lot.”

Eric Wood and Shane Narbonne withdrew from Superstock; Wood with a blown motor and Narbonne, nursing a minor injury and saving himself for the Classic. Steady rain completely soaked the track but it was drying fast, raising concerns about rain tire life over 15 laps.

Scott Greenwood stole the holeshot aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10 and was never headed, winning by nearly 10 seconds while trying to preserve his tires late on a dry track. Team mates, Kip Peterson and Jason Carter rounded the podium aboard their Motorace/Michelin Suzuki GSX-R’s. Neal Garvin charged from the back of the pack to come up a half second short of third in a great ride aboard his Dunlop equipped GSX-R750.

With the track nearly dry, ASRA Superbike Championship leader, Paul Allison grabbed the holeshot aboard his Chronic Motorsports Yamaha R6 but was quickly overtaken by local star, Scott Greenwood, riding an improved Kawasaki ZX-6R. Meanwhile, Robby Nigl was coming fast on his Peachpit Ducati 748 in third, followed by Fred Stearns on his Souhegan Motorsports/Foglieta Realty Dunlop equipped Yamaha R6 and Kyle Thompson on a BCM Dunlop shod Ducati 848. Nigl took over second on the third lap and the order was set at the front all the way to the checkered flag.

Scott Greenwood; “We’re finally getting some help with our set-up. Jim Allen at Dunlop and Jamie Hacking’s crew has been terrific with us. They gave us some new base settings Friday morning and we are making progress with them. We have a lot of work yet to do, but we think we’re going the right direction.”

Paul Allison; “Every round it’s the same. The track is new to me and I’m slow in the first sessions. I keep working at it and my crew finds ways to improve my set-up as the weekend progresses. Somehow I find myself fairly competitive by Sunday afternoon. I am a first year road racing expert, although I have some supermoto experience. I’m 28, so I don’t have time to waste if I’m going to go anywhere. I want to race AMA next year. Dave Brite of Chonic Motorsports has been terrific in teaching me the ropes and giving me a chance to compete.”

LRRS Round Four

Loudon, NH Laconia Bike Week kicked off with round 4 of the Loudon Road Racing Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The races ran a special schedule that began Friday and finished up early Sunday afternoon with three sprints leading into to the 86th Loudon Classic.

A large rider turnout showed up for a chance to win more then hardware. Middleweight GP, Middleweight Supersport, Unlimited GP and Lightweight Supersport featured excellent purses for both experts and amateurs. An altered road course only added to the excitement.

Turns 1, 1a and 2 were new, and proved over a second slower in the early races, but by late Friday afternoon lap times were dropping closer to the old track. Under perfect conditions on Saturday, Eric Wood was close to his best time with a 1:11.327 in a Heavyweight Superbike win aboard his Woodcraft Ducati. Then Shane Narbonne went 1:10.950 in winning Unlimited Supersport aboard his DAS GSX-R1000, setting a personal best.

While similar to the old layout, the new turns produced different strategies on the starts as well as the closing laps. Most riders entered turn 1 on a tighter line, setting up for faster apexes at turns 1a and 2. Eventually everybody improved through the section, making for thrilling passing. We could see significantly lower lap times as the season wears on.

Among the experts, Brett Guyer continued his undefeated season with four LRRS wins aboard his Seacoast/Dunlop Ducati Classic. Michael Donovon piloted his Woodcraft/Higgins Powersports Honda CRF450 to three wins, while Jeff Wood, Eric Wood and Scott Greenwood scored 2 wins each. Among the amateurs, Juan Rivera won three times aboard his Algeria Racing GSX-R600, while Tyler Sweeney won twice aboard his SRE/Brian Kent Honda RS125.

Round five is scheduled for July 18-19 and marks the beginning of the second half of the LRRS season. Log onto www.lrrsracing.com for details.
