Former racer Steve McLaughlin submitted the mid-1970s proposal that led to the establishment of the AMA Superbike class, and followed that up about a decade later by starting the FIM Superbike World Championship Series with a group of investors. Now a consultant working on several projects affiliated with Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR, McLaughlin was involved in developing the formula now used in AMA Daytona SportBike, pitting 1000cc+ V-Twins against 600cc Inline Fours. McLaughlin, usually seen sporting a straw hat, has been spending time in the paddock at various World Superbike events lately, and will be at Miller Motorsports Park this coming weekend. If you’re a fan of World Superbikes and see him, let him know what you think.
