TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (May 21, 2009) “” The second half of May is like an early Christmas for motorcycle racing fans in Utah and the surrounding region. With the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix in the rear-view mirror, Miller Motorsports Park is gearing up for two weekends of exciting two-wheeled racing action. All the fun kicks off this weekend, May 22-24, with the Bridgestone/WERA National Endurance Series, Michelin/WERA National Challenge Series and Pirelli/WERA West Regional Series presented by Lucas Oil Products. WERA is the biggest amateur motorcycle racing series in America. Practice sessions for five racing groups on Friday and Saturday morning lead up to a six-hour Bridgestone/WERA National Endurance Series race, which will take the green flag at 11:30 am on Saturday. On Sunday, morning practice for all groups will precede the Michelin/WERA National Challenge Series Races. There will be a total of 17 races on the 3.048-mile Outer Course. Tickets for this weekend are only $6 per person on Saturday and Sunday. Kids 12 and under are free. Admission on Friday is free for everyone. Next weekend, May 29-31, brings the biggest event of the year to MMP, the HANNspree Superbike World Championship. This is the third-biggest racing series in the world, and this year brings added excitement with three notable Americans in the field. Texan Ben Spies is gaining worldwide attention after turning his back on three AMA Superbike titles and going straight to the front of the pack in the super-tough World Superbike field. He has taken the pole in all six events to date, all at tracks he’s never seen before, and has five wins from 12 races (two per event) so far this year. At his “home” race in Utah, he’ll get to race against some familiar faces in AMA stars Jake Zemke and Jamie Hacking, both of whom are riding in temporary replacement of injured riders. Joining World Superbike will be the World Supersport Championship, making its first appearance in North America since 1999. This series features the best 600cc riders in the world, and the race at MMP will include a number of “one-event” riders looking to get noticed by the World Championship teams and fans. One of those will be local rider Oleg Pianykh, a Russian immigrant who lives in Salt Lake City and normally competes in the Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains series at MMP. Filling out the schedule for the weekend will be the Larry H. Miller Superbike Challenge, a semi-pro event comprised of two classes organized by the Utah SportBike Association. Tickets for the World Superbike weekend are priced as follows: Paddock Passes are $10 per day, or $25 for the weekend. General Admission tickets are $27 Friday, $37 Saturday and $47 Sunday, or $77 for the weekend. Grandstand tickets are $42 Friday, $52 Saturday and $62 Sunday, or $122 for the weekend.
