Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Blake Young is traveling to Louisville, Kentucky tonight to have a hand specialist examine his left hand, which he badly injured in a crash during Sunday’s AMA Pro American Superbike race at Barber Motorsports Park. Young was trying to pass Josh Hayes on the second lap of the race when the two riders made incidental contact. Young’s brake lever touched Hayes or Hayes’ bike, causing Young to immediately crash. Young’s left hand was then caught under his bike’s handlebar as it slid along the pavement, badly damaging his pinkie and ring fingers. Dr. Thomas Bryan, an orthopedic surgeon who has performed surgery on several AMA racers, was at the track and accompanied Young to a local hospital. There, Young’s hand was examined, cleaned and bandaged to prevent infection. “They tried to take some X-rays,” said Young, “but they couldn’t get a clean shot of anything.” Dr. Bryan then advised Young to go see the same hand specialist that treated hand injuries Roger Hayden suffered last year, coincidentally at Barber Motorsports Park. “We were having a really good weekend up to that point,” said Young. “I just want to let all the fans know that I’ll be OK. I’m getting my hand taken care of, and I’ll be back racing as soon as possible.” Update: Young originally told Roadracingworld.com that he was going to St. Louis, Missouri.
