Updated: Siglin Wins AFM Formula Pacific Race With Last-Corner Pass At Infineon Raceway

In the Kal Gard Formula Pacific race at Infineon Raceway, it looked as though Cory Call was going to run and hide from the field on his MDK Suzuki, opening a big gap over Chris Siglin and the rest of the pack in the the first opening laps. As the race went on, Siglin was able to close the gap on his Roseville Cycle tuned GSX-R1000, taking the position from Call heading into the last turn on the last lap before going on to take the win. Call held on for a strong second place finish, while Bobby Fong came out on top of a battle with James Randolph to finish third despite starting from the fifth row on the grid. “That was really hectic, coming through the pack like that,” Fong said after the race. “Being out there on the fifth row, I knew I had to get up there fast to run with the big guys! James ran a really good race, but these DOT Michelins I was running on my Suzuki GSX-R1000 stuck like glue. My crew has been working hard all weekend trying to get it dialed in – it’s only my second time riding the bike this year!” “That was all my bad there,” said Call, who won the Open Superbike and the Track Club Open Production races earlier in the day. “I thought he was going to come up the inside on that last lap, since I was using this late apex line into 11, and I knew his braking ability is incredible. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the bike stopped or turned! That let him just sneak up the inside, and that’s all it was from there.” “Seriously, Cory can come off a corner!” explained Siglin from the Winner’s Circle. “I think he had me in like every single corner. On that last lap I just about settled for second. I watched him use the same line two or three times into Turn 11, saw him do it again on the last lap and thought ‘Here it is! Here’s the door!’ I just set up wide, came in, side by side coming out of that last corner, and I just outdrove him to the line. Luckily I only weigh about 130 lbs!” A number of riders had very successful weekends, scoring multiple wins on the day. Allen Erkman kept his season moving with a pair of wins, taking first place finishes in 500 Twins and 450 Superbike. Former Top 10 plate holder Rob Campbell emerged from retirement on a CRF450 Supermoto, getting it sideways for the spectators a number of times en route to first place finishes in Formula Singles and 250 Superbike. Matt Green had another extremely successful weekend, with first place finishes on his Strongmail Desmoto Sport Ducati 749 in both the Desmoto Sport Open Twins race and the 750 Superbike race. One of the best races of the day went to first time winner, as Robert Tinagero came out on top of a race-long, 6 rider battle for the lead to take the win on his GMB Cycle Pro Kawasaki in the Keigwins@theTrack 600 Production race. Berto Wooldridge crossed the line in second on his BayAreaRidersForum Racing Yamaha, with Sebastiao Ferreira third. “I ended up getting Sebastian in Turn 9 when he was backing it in,” said Tinagero, “so I just went right around the outside of him thinking ‘Thanks buddy!’ I knew I still had two laps to go, and was thinking of where I could pass Somy (Hoffman) for the lead. On the last lap, we got into Turn 4 when his motor just seized or something, making me think ‘Hey, that was easier than I thought it would be!’ From there, I just said ‘Let’s be smooth, not force anything, and it’ll just happen!” The next round of the 2009 AFM Championship takes place on May 23-24 at Infineon Raceway.
