Longtime WERA racer Chuck Bannon passed away yesterday. Chuck suffered from A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and leaves his wife, Elaine Bannon, and son, John Bannon. The funeral information and family ALS donation information is listed below. Many of us knew Chuck who raced for many years competitively with WERA and previously with GLRRA. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to ALS-TDI TriStateTrek: ~http://www.active.com/donate/Trek2009/ebannon402~ More, from a press release issued by Breen Bannon: GLLRA and WERA Racer Chuck Bannon Succumbs to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Charles “Chuck” Bannon, 44, who spent many a season competing in GLLRA and the WERA North Central region, racing as Expert #402, passed away quietly at home with his family by his side, on Saturday, 4-18-09, after a 3 year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Chuck was a dedicated racer, he loved racing and hanging out in the paddock with other racers, discussing ways to go faster. Chuck was a GLLRA Rookie of the Year and overall Novice Champion, won multiple WERA Expert Regional Championships, and the highlight of his racing career was winning an Expert WERA National Challenge Series race in 2003. Chuck also raced at the Bonneville salt flats and attended the Isle of Man races. He will be sadly missed by many, but especially by his wife Elaine, who was always at his side in the paddock, and their 5-year-old son, Johnny. Chuck worked as engineer with Ford Motor Company. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, April 21 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 W. Dunlap, Northville, Mich. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory, 132 Orchard, Northville. A memorial service will be held in Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, Ohio this summer.
