When AMA Pro American Superbike practice started in the wet Sunday morning at Auto Club Speedway, Jordan Suzuki’s Aaron Yates was standing in his garage wearing street clothes wondering whether he was going to go out or not, but when the session ended the track was dryer and Yates had the fastest lap time. On the final lap of the session, Yates ripped off a 1:32.352 on his 2008-model GSX-R1000 to lead the 11-rider session. Up to that point Larry Pegram had led the session with a 1:32.793 on his Team Foremost Pegram Racing Ducati 1098R, even though Pegram suffered a huge highside during Saturday’s American Superbike race and suffered a concussion and a badly bruised hip. As the session ended, local weather radar being displayed on monitors in the media center showed that several rain showers had passed over the track and that the skies directly west of the track were relatively clear.
