Daytona 200 Results Revised, Again

© 2009, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc. From a press release issued By David Swarts.

The results of the 68th Daytona 200 by Honda held March 6th at Daytona International Speedway, have been revised for at least the fourth time since originally being issued at 2:00 a.m. EST on March 7, about three and a half hours after the race ended. The revision reflects ongoing issues with AMA Pro Racing’s timing and scoring computer system as well as problems scoring numerous laps done under full-course caution conditions, followed by a red flag and a race restart during the Daytona 200. After a full audit of every “hit” every bike in the field made at each of the four timing loops on the track and the two timing loops on pit lane, AMA Pro Racing has disqualified two additional riders, Erion Honda’s Chris Peris and Peter Brady Racing’s John Ashmead, for “blatant passing of multiple riders during the caution laps,” according to AMA Pro Road Racing Series Director Bill Syfan. Bruce Rossmeyers/RMR Buell’s Danny Eslick was disqualified immediately after the race for the same offense. In addition to their disqualifications, Ashmead, Eslick and Peris will also receive point-deduction penalties. Because the Daytona 200 was the first round of the 2009 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Championship, that means that they will start round two of the series with a negative point total. That also means that Ashmead will lose all mileage from the race, slowing his quest to catch and surpass Rick Shaw for the all-time Daytona 200 mileage record. In fact, Ashmead will drop to third on the all-time mileage list behind Ricky Orlando. Syfan said that other riders were identified as passing during the caution laps in the Daytona 200, but those riders were only accessed point penalties and were not disqualified. One such rider is Alan Schmidt, who is now credited with finishing 19th and will still be paid his $5000 purse for that position. Syfan added that due to the audit, data compatibility problems between AMA Pro Racing’s existing timing and scoring system and the all-new AMA Pro Racing website and other issues the point penalties may not show up on the Daytona 200 results web page until tomorrow or Monday, March 16. Below is the latest version of the Daytona 200 results.
