It was mixed weather that greeted to field of the final round of the Castrol Power 1 Superbike Championships at Pukekohe Park, south of Auckland over the weekend. Racing was stopped several times due to the weather conditions, but all the same there was some incredible racing. The Superbikes were dominated by Series leader Australian Robbie Bugden on his Triple R Suzuki GSXR1000. Bugden took both the Superbike TT trophy and the Geoff Perry Memorial, on his way to his Third consecutive New Zealand Superbike title. Bugden was chased hard by Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud (Suzuki) and fellow Australian Gareth Jones (Yamaha). The 600 Sports Production class had some surprises over the weekend. Local lad Pukekohe’s Sam Smith came back on Sunday after a heavy crash on his Yamaha R6 on Saturday to win the first race. When the flag dropped for the 600 Sports Production TT, the battle was on between Smith and young Australian Gareth Jones on another Yamaha. The lead changed several times and when the chequed flag dropped everyone looked at each other. Once the timing system was checked Jones had won by 0.004 seconds. Jones also won the championship. The Formula Three championship went to Palmerston North’s Glen Williams, while the TT Trophy went to Wellington’s Glen Skachill. In the Pro-twin class Tauranga’s Sam Love took both the Championship and the TT trophy. The Sidecar Championship was taken out by the Lawrance brothers fro Auckland, while the defending Champions Wanganui’s Steve Bron took the TT Title Provisional Results Round Five Castrol Power 1 Superbike Championships Pukekohe Park. 7/8 March 2009.
