Jeff Wood broke the lap record again at Homestead-Miami Speedway during the Unlimited Grand Prix race at the CCS Florida season-opening event February 8. He had just set the somewhat longstanding record during the final race of the year at Homestead two months earlier. Wood ran the fastest lap halfway through the Unlimited Grand Prix race on his Suzuki GSX-R1000. He was gridded on the second row, nailed the lead from the drop of the green flag and never looked back. Robertino Pietri maneuvered his Suzuki GSX-R1000 from the fourth row of the grid up to second place but couldn’t get close enough to challenge Wood. Wood and Pietri were both running at record pace throughout the race, but the fastest lap was run by Wood on the third lap, a 1:23.556, which established the new motorcycle lap record. After the race, Wood thanked Pietri for “pushing me all weekend. Just like December, he was right there the whole time, and I couldn’t rest for a second. If I messed up one corner, I’m sure he would have been right next to me. So, I had to put my head down and ride as hard as I could. I was sliding all over the place.” Wood went on to thank Dunlop, the Penguin Racing School, Woodcraft and Bettencourts for their support. Wood also won the first race of the day, Expert GTO. Pietri commented, “I think if Jeff keeps coming to the races, we’re going to keep going faster and faster. This is the second time he got me and I think next time, I will be prepared to get him.” Pietri thanked Prieto Performance, Eric Gray with GMD Computrack, Dunlop and his uncle Carlos for all their help. Father and Son duo Rudolf and Michael Von Lignau, each gridded on the back row in their class, went out together and won for the first time, the Expert and Amateur Unlimited SuperTwins races. Father Rudolf also won the Expert Formula 40 race while son, Michael won the Amateur Thunderbike event. The weekend’s other multiple winners were: Kevin Mendez with victories in GT Lights and Lightweight Formula 40; Tomas Puerta in the Middleweight Supersport and Middleweight Grand Prix classes; and Rodolfo Ramirez in the Lightweight Superbike and Lightweight Supersport classes. UNLIMITED GRAND PRIX RESULTS: 1. Jeff Wood (Suz GSX-R1000); 2. Robertino Pietri (Suz GSX-R1000); 3. Sean Dwyer (Suz GSX-R1000); 4. Lars Remsen (Suz GSX-R1000); 5. Gustavo Sanchez (Yam YZF-R1); 6.
