Diverse Weekend for Team Bernard Yamaha Young Australian Gareth Jones gave the Bernard Yamaha’s their first outing for the season at round one of the ProMoto Tri-Series at Manfeild on Saturday Dec 20. Unfortunately during the first F1 Supers race, Jones mistook a waved white last lap flag for the chequered finish flag and was in pit lane before in realised his mistake. He made up for it in the second race, dicing with Suzuki mounted Andrew Stroud and Honda’s Craig Shirriffs. The battle went right to the wire with Jones settling for third behind the others. “This is only the first meeting of a long summer,” said Jones after racing. The ‘600 Supers’ class was a different story, with Jones taking his Yamaha R6 to a convincing win in the first race and then battled with Suzuki’s Jared Love for the duration on race two, with the lead changing several times. It all came down to the last lap, Love got the run into the last turn, came out in front to take the win. The pair ended the weekend equal on 47 points. On Sunday, the Team went on to display their machinery at Te Manawa Museum Gallery Science Centre in Palmerston North. Team owner/manager Brian Bernard accompanied Jones and the pair along with several other team members spent three hours meeting the public and signing autographs. The Team’s display was part of Te Manawa’s promotion Motorcycles Unleashed, a century of competition bikes. The Team is now back at its Wanganui base, preparing for this Friday’s Cemetery Circuit street races. “The weekend had its up & downs, but now I have my sights on the Boxing Day races,” said Jones while travelling home to Wanganui
