AMA professional racer Chris Ulrich working in conjunction with track day provider Fastrack Riders raised over $1100 Saturday, the first day of a two-day fundraiser for the Roadracing World Action Fund at Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, California. Ulrich gave 19 individuals rides lasting three laps or more in exchange for a donation to the Roadracing World Action Fund. Fastrack Riders provided staff, riding gear (free of charge to the donors) and track time to the effort. It was the fourth consecutive year Ulrich and Fastrack Riders have cooperated to give two-seat racebike rides to the general public, and the effort drew new donors, repeat riders and one celebrity. “This is my second year,” said Corey Miller. “I came out last year, in 2007, and then this year I was so excited to do it again because I had so much fun last year. This time I got a little braver and wanted to get my knee on the ground. I got my knee down on the ground, and that was the weirdest feeling in the world. “I only ride pit bikes right now, but I’m really interested in [riding motorcycles]. I want to start doing some of the classes so I know what it’s about, get my license, learn on the street but I do have some hopes to get on the track. I do think that’s the safest way to do it, but I am totally interested in it.” “That was f””king awesome!” movie star/television star Dean McDermott said after his ride with Ulrich. McDermott was at Auto Club Speedway enjoying his second-ever track outing and took time at the end of the day to learn a few things with a ride on the back of Ulrich’s GSX-R1000. “It gave me an opportunity to start looking ahead. I’m working with [riding instructor] Dale Kieffer, and Dale says I get fixated on the apex of the corner. He said, ‘Start scanning.’ I was freed up as a passenger, so it enabled me to look ahead at the turns that were coming, to see what was coming up next. It was a great learning experience.” McDermott, who co-stars with wife Tori Spelling in their reality show Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood and was working with a film crew for the show at Auto Club Speedway, said he wanted to ride with Ulrich again on Sunday, when the fundraiser continues. Ulrich made over 60 laps of the Auto Club Speedway AMA course, each with a passenger on board, turning a fastest two-up lap of 1:36.2 with racer Melissa Paris on the back.
