Sunday Wrapup: Fall Cycle Scene Concludes With Big Numbers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Despite tough economic conditions, Daytona International Speedway’s Fall Cycle Scene experienced a strong turnout of motorcycle enthusiasts for the four days of activities at “The World Center of Racing.”

The Speedway experienced increased numbers in many of the track activities surrounding its popular Fall Cycle Scene including:

— The annual Monster Dash charity ride, which featured two laps around DIS with a commemorative T-shirt and two drink tickets, more than tripled in size to over 600 participants.

— Bikers who took advantage of the free daily admission to the DIS infield were more than 23,000, an increase of nearly 3,000.

— Daytona 500 Experience, “The Official Attraction of NASCAR”, known as D5X during Fall Cycle Scene, was open for free admission on Friday and Saturday and reported steady traffic. The area band “Outbreak” played inside the 60,000-square foot attraction on both days. The Attraction’s motion simulator Acceleration Alley also sold out both days.

— Manufacturers and vendors reported strong traffic as well outside the track. All manufacturers including Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Harley Davidson, reported an increase in free demo rides compared to last October’s event with each scheduling their allotment of demo rides by 10 a.m.

— DIS hosted thrilling on-track activity highlighted by Roadracingworld.com’s second straight victory in the 8 Hours At Daytona SunTrust MOTO-ST Series season finale with riders Cory West, Chris Ulrich and Martin Cardenas.

“We’ve worked very hard to grow our motorcycle events and we’re thrilled with this year’s turnout at Fall Cycle Scene,” Daytona International Speedway President Robin Braig said. “We’re always searching for new ways to enhance the two-wheel events at DIS and we’re looking forward to building on this success for March’s Daytona 200 Week By Honda.”

Hayes sighting: Josh Hayes was at DIS for Fall Cycle Scene supporting his wife Melissa Paris, who competed in Saturday’s 8 Hours At Daytona SunTrust MOTO-ST Series season finale as well as some CCS events.

But he was also racing himself.

Hayes, a former AMA Formula Xtreme and Superstock champion, competed in the 10-lap Factory Pro Sportbike American Sportbike Racing Association event on Sunday aboard a Honda and finished third in what was a fierce seven-bike battle to the finish.

Meanwhile, Paris won the Expert Llightweight Grand Prix on Sunday.

Jeff Wood wins three ASRA events: Despite having some broken ribs, Jeff Wood of Winchendon, Mass. captured three of the four American Sportbike Racing Association events on Sunday Superbike, Superstock and Factory Pro Sportbike.

Overall for the CCS and ASRA events for the weekend, Wood won six times and finished second twice.

“Six wins, two seconds on the weekend,” Wood said. “The only two seconds are when I started way back in the grid. They grid by points so there were a couple classes I was pretty far back on. This is my best weekend ever down here.”

Wood ran this weekend hurt after breaking ribs last weekend during an event at Road Atlanta.

“I had a big high side and broke two ribs in my back,” Wood said. “The ribs are pretty sore and that’s why I’m tired right now.”
