The FIM and Dorna honoured all the Australian winners of the MotoGP World Championship at a special event at the Phillip Island circuit on Friday, as well as honouring Great Britain’s best known champion. As part of MotoGP´s celebrations marking the 60th season of Grand Prix racing this year, `MotoGP Champions Towers´ were presented to mark the achievements of some legendary premier class World Champions. Mr. Claude Danis (FIM Road-Racing Commission President) and Mr. Carmelo Ezpeleta (CEO Dorna Sports) presented the awards for Barry Sheene (1976,77), Wayne Gardner (1987), Mick Doohan (1994, 95, 96, 97, 98) and Casey Stoner (2007). The late British star Barry Sheene, who was a popular figure in Australia, was represented by his son Freddie, whilst Australian heroes Gardner, Doohan and Stoner were on hand to collect their replica trophies. The trophy is a smaller version of the MotoGP Champions Tower which will be handed out to Valentino Rossi at the end of season FIM MotoGP Awards Ceremony in Valencia. Mr Ezpeleta commented, `For us, much of the success of MotoGP is down to its tradition and history and in the 60th season of the championship we wanted to honour the former champions who have shaped the sport we know today. That’s why we made this trophy as it reflects that history. I hope it can become a symbol of our championship in the future.´
