WHO WILL BE THE LUCKY RIDERS IN THE CORONA AMA SUPERBIKE FINALE TO KISS THE CORKSCREW? MONTEREY, Calif. (September 9, 2008) Which of the AMA riders will get to celebrate victory and kiss the legendary Corkscrew, a series of turns with a 300 foot elevation change at the upcoming Corona AMA Superbike Finale on September 27-28? A simple way to understand what it is like to race and win on two-wheels at the racetrack is to speak to the riders. American riders like Kenny Roberts, Wayne Rainey and Nicky Hayden know the history of the track because they made the history. A few of the riders shared their most potent memories of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and their expectations for the upcoming Corona AMA Superbike Finale. Ben Spies, from the Yoshimura Suzuki Factory team has won the AMA Superbike Championship due to an insurmountable points lead over his teammate Mat Mladin and sealed the 2008 title. Spies becomes only the fourth rider in the history of the series to win the title three consecutive times. “I’m looking forward to try to improve on my July race where I came in second,” Spies said. “I can now go to the Superbike final and put my head down and race. It should make for an exciting end to the season.” “For me, this track is fantastic because I had my first victory ever here in 2007,” said Josh Herrin, rider of the Graves Yamaha in Supersport. “I would like to win again and follow the Rossi tradition of kissing the Corkscrew.” “The best memory of Laguna was winning the final Superstock race of the year last season,” said Jake Holden, Corona Extra Honda rider currently second in Superstock. “That was incredible. I want to do it again at this season’s AMA finale.” “I’ve had a few wins here. I live eight miles down the road and it’s pretty cool to race a Superbike, then sleep in your own bed,” said Doug Chandler 3-time AMA Superbike champion, inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2006. “One time I got together with another rider at the top of the Corkscrew because my footpeg came off.” “I remember one race; Mike Baldwin got into me going into the Corkscrew, bent my exhaust pipe, and it shut down one cylinder. And I remember thinking, “Oh no, the thing’s quittin’!” remembered Kenny Roberts ‘The King,’ three-time 500cc Grand Prix world champion. “So, around turn two, they’re leaving me, I look down and see the exhaust pipe’s bent up and I thought “Aha!” Luckily it was hot, and I was able to kick it back down. All the way from turn two to turn four, I’m kicking this thing. Then it started running alright.
