Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden broke a bone in his left hand when he crashed his ZX-10R during provisional AMA Superbike qualifying Friday afternoon at Road Atlanta. Hayden was on a fast lap when he lost front traction and crashed at high speed going through Turn Four. He did not hit anything other than the ground, but he said he knew right away he had injured his left hand. “I went to the doctor, and I chipped some piece of a bone off in my hand. Kind of like what I did at Daytona, just a little bit bigger piece,” said Hayden. “It’s just another hit to the season. They just keep coming each weekend. I guess the biggest downer was we were having a pretty good weekend. The 600 was going good [He was fourth-fastest in Friday practice]. The Superbike, I think I was fourth or fifth at the time. It’s just a bummer, but that’s the way it goes some time. Now we’ve just got to figure out what we’re gonna do for tomorrow and see what happens.” Roger Hayden just returned to action at Laguna Seca in July, after missing several races with a broken pelvis and a severely injured left hand, injuries sustained at Barber Motorsports Park in April. Most recently he was affected by a stomach illness during the VIR round of the series August 15-17. Hayden’s teammate Jamie Hacking also crashed his ZX-10R Superbike, during Friday morning practice, at Road Atlanta and suffered what he called a “jammed thumb” on his right hand. Hayden and Hacking qualified seventh and eighth, respectively, Friday.
