TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH “” When the calendar flips over to September, it marks the beginning of the end of the racing season for the staff at Miller Motorsports Park. With three big events on consecutive weekends, the internationally renowned road racing facility in Tooele is making preparations to end its third season with a flourish. The month will kick off with a celebration of two-wheeled motorsport called Cycle Fest over the weekend of Sept. 5-7. The headline attraction will be the third annual return of the AMA XTRM Supermoto Championship on Sunday, which will take place on MMP’s state-of-the-art Supermoto course that combines the 0.9-mile Miller Kart Track with dirt and metal jumps. The series’ visit will be the fourth round of a seven-round 2008 series. Cycle Fest will also include the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) and its Bonneville Vintage GP. The AHRMA competitors bring lovingly restored, historic racing motorcycles and will compete on the 2.2-mile East Course in a variety of classes. The AHRMA event will also include racing sidecars, which were wildly popular in their first MMP appearance last year. Also competing during the course of the Cycle Fest weekend will be MMP’s own Honda Presents the Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains motorcycle road racing series on the 2.2-mile West Course and the Plaza Cycle Utah Supermoto Championship sharing the Supermoto course with the AMA pros. Off-track entertainment includes a Utah Highway Patrol motorcycle skills competition. Fans are invited to try their hand on the UHP skills course from 11:30 am 2:00 pm on Sunday to see if you can match or beat their times. In addition, the Mongoose BMX Team will be doing demonstrations on Sunday. The following weekend, September 12-14, brings the return of Historic Sportscar Racing Ltd. (HSR) for the annual Heroes of Speed event. The cars of HSR are like a rolling history lesson in motorsport, spanning the growth of the sport and the different categories of racing cars over the past four decades. Previous years have seen a little bit of everything, including Formula 1 cars, Indy cars, GT prototypes, small-bore formula cars and small- and big-bore production-based cars. The weekend will include what has become an annual tradition, a parade of racing cars from the track to Veterans Park in downtown Tooele on Friday evening, where the fans can get up close to the cars and meet their drivers and crews. Other off-track entertainment includes live music and a Concours d’Elegance hosted by the Jaguar Club of Utah. The weekend of September 19-21 will be one of the biggest events of the year, the Sunchaser 1000 presented by The Grand and Little America Hotels. The Sunchaser 1000 will include the season finale for the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, a 1000-km, 7.5-hour race on the 4.5-mile Full Course beginning at 11:00 am on Saturday. Supporting races will be the season finale for the SCCA Pro Racing Sirius Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup on Saturday; a double-header season finale for the MMP-based Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup on Friday and Sunday; the first-ever appearance at MMP for the Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, North America’s premier open-wheel development series; and the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series for modified street-stock production cars on Sunday. There will be a myriad of entertaining off-track activities throughout the weekend, including live music, Cyco Ward stunt bikes and rock-crawler rides at MMP’s new offroad course.
