WSMC Classic Series: Tigert Takes Formula 1 Nailbiter Over Lowry Jeff Tigert used every bit of his considerable skill to run down Karl Lowry and then hang on barely to win the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club’s headlining Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula 1 race on Sunday, for the third month in a row. Tigert, fourth at the end of the first lap on his American Honda-backed, Dunlop-shod CBR1000RR, erased a lead of more than three seconds built up by Lowry on his Graves Motorsports, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1. Tigert led across the stripe on lap 12 and appeared to be headed for a dominant win. But Lowry dug deep and clawed his way back onto Tigert’s tailsection, closing visibly in Willow’s high-speed sweepers and narrowing the gap to within two bike lengths on lap 18. The two ran within five bike lengths the last few laps, with Tigert getting the better drive onto the back straight on the last lap and holding the lead to the end. At the line, Lowry was just 0.302-second back of Tigert, with West Coast GP Cycles-sponsored Brant Wiwi on his Pirelli-shod YZF-R1 30 seconds back in third. “I knew going into the Formula 1 race that it wasn’t going to be easy,” Tigert said from atop the podium. “Once again, I kind of lost my mojo, the gas light was on for the last three laps, and I’m just happy to get the win here today.” Lowry started strongly, but lost ground to Tigert in the middle section of the 50-miler as he struggled with arm pump. “I was trying to build what I could, because I knew he (Tigert) was coming,” Lowry said. “We had a chance to take it to him, but we couldn’t quite get there.” Wiwi was emotional after taking the final podium spot. “I know it’s third place, but you don’t know what this means to me,” Wiwi said. “And this proves the fact that the Pirellis work here they clearly do.” Lowry dominated the rest of his races, winning in Open Superbike, Open Superstock, 600cc Modified Production, 600cc Superstock and 650cc Superbike (where he beat Tigert).
