Aprilia USA Team Takes Pole Position at Heartland Park Topeka TOPEKA, Kan. (August 17, 2008) — Ty Howard on the No. 1 Aprilia USA/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Aprilia Tuono 1000R claimed the Destination Daytona Pole Award in qualifying for the Level 5 Heartland Park 500 presented by Hooters, the fifth round of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series, at Heartland Park Topeka Sunday morning. The Weatherford, Texas rider turned a lap of one minute, 40.541 (89.516 miles per hour) in the waning moments of the 25-minute session to lead overall and in the Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins (SST) class. Howard will share the bike with Mike Himmelsbach of Quakertown, Penn. in Sunday afternoon’s race. “I got four fast laps out there and my last lap was the best, it felt pretty good,” Howard said. “I slid in a couple of corners and definitely gave up a couple of tenths right there. But I’m pretty pleased with the bike. This is a race where the pace will be regulated by tire wear. I think if we can run comfortable 41s or 42s we’ll be all right.” The No. 8 Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing Buell 1125R of Boca Raton, Fla.’s Michael Barnes had turned the quickest lap at 1:40.436 but exceeded the class horsepower limit in post-qualifying tech and was penalized. The No. 89 Scuderia Mannheimer Gammacril Racing Ducati 749 of Federico Mannheimer and Fabrizio Guerra will start second on the grid after both the No. 75 Touring Sport Ducati 848 and the No. 25 Team Hooters Aprilia Tuono 1000R, which had set the third and fourth fastest times, respectively, were also over the horsepower limit in post-qualifying tech. Justin Filice of Modesto, Calif. claimed pole position in the BMW GrandSport Twins (GST) class with a time of 1:46.653 on the RightsforBikers.com Ducati PS1000LE. In the Sport Twins (ST) class, Dustin Dominguez of Newalla, Okla. turned the fastest lap on the No. 67 M4 Avteq Racing Suzuki SV650 with a 1:46.623. The Level 5 Heartland Park 500 presented by Hooters is set to get the green flag at 4:00 p.m. and is scheduled to go 125 laps or three and a half hours. The SunTrust MOTO-ST Series is organized and sanctioned by Professional Motorsports Productions (PMP) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and the Grand American Road Racing Association, based in Daytona Beach, Fla., provides the series with administrative and commercial support.
